What Exactly is “420”

There are many misconceptions around what “420” actually stands for. Some say “420” is a code for police officers that marijuana is being smoked. Some even say that it’s because of Bob Dylan’s song, “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35,” due to the fact that 12 multiplied by 35 equals 420. These are cool theories, but unfortunately, they’re just not true.

The story that many believe to be the most accurate is that five students at San Rafael High School in Marri county, California would meet up at 4:20 PM to smoke weed. They would meet up at 4:20 because their extracurricular activities normally ended then.

These five students were Dave Reddix, Mark Gravich, Jeffrey Noel, Steve Capper, and Larry Schwartz. They were nicknamed the “Waldos” because they would all meet at a wall. They would use “420” as a code for marijuana.

The story doesn’t stop there, the term “420” became even more popular after Reddix began working for the Grateful Dead‘s Bassist, Phil Lesh. He joined the band as a roadie, which helped make the term more popular. In 1990, Deadheads (the term for loyal grateful dead fans) started handing out flyers inviting people to come smoke on April 20th at 4:20 PM.

A flyer made its way into the hands of, Steve Bloom, a former reporter for High Times Magazine, a cannabis culture publisher. The magazine printed the flyer in 1991 and started to also use “420” as a reference to cannabis. After that, the rest was history.

“420” Now

Today, 4/20 has become quite huge. There are “420” events held all around the globe. As more places begin to legalize cannabis, the tradition continues to grow. High Times, along with many other credible publishers, still use the term, validating its importance.
