All About San Antonio Schools

Education in the city of San Antonio, Texas serves over 100,000 students across its 31 higher education facilities including San Antonio University of Texas, San Antonio University of Texas A&M, and the five colleges of the Alamo Community College District. Such colleges include St. Mary's College, the Incarnate Word University, Trinity University, and the Baptist University of Wayland. The San Antonio Public Library serves all of these institutions along with the 17 school districts within the city.

The city is also home to more than 30 private schools and charter schools. These schools include San Antonio Academy, Holy Cross High School, Incarnate Word High School, St. Anthony Catholic High School.

Texas has been cited in recent months as a state where a lot of change has taken place and where miracles of education have happened. While this state has undergone several major reforms over the past two decades, it is wise to remember that improvements have been imposed on the state in many ways–including offering comprehensible instruction to children at the early stages of English language learning, ensuring access to public education for recent immigrant pupils and, more recently, establishing a more equal school program.Many changes were taken slowly, partly because of their cost, such as reducing class sizes. Following long and bitter wars, other changes have been introduced, including the creation of the state accountability mechanism. Many of these measures have led to improving the quality of public education in Texas.

Despite improvements, the “lame still do not indeed walk, nor do the blind yet see,” for Texas’ education improvements are not so miraculous that we can declare that the system has been cured of all its ills. Our school systems are still failing many students in Texas today; too many students are still dropping out before graduation; and there is still a disparity in achievement between rich and poor and between white and minority pupils. Most teachers are unprepared for teaching their pupils, and too many families are burdened with schools that can do better for some but not all of their students. While we need to appreciate what has been done, we also need to realize that we still have a long way to go before it can be said that all children in Texas are fully respected–and all are productive.
