Essex Modern City | 51 Essex Street, San Antonio, Texas 78210, United States

Nearly every prosperous city is built on a foundation of art and community. A central meeting space or plaza is one of the most important elements of any city, as shown in centuries of Spanish colonial design. Even while a building is significant, it is only a building. People who live, work, and play there are what give a place life.

On the “wrong side” of the train tracks, according to what they were told, lies Essex Modern City, a former pallet manufacturing facility. They took their advice and instructed them to go kick rocks. They witnessed a community with a vibrant culture and a sense of pride. That only required that location to congregate and promote that culture.

They started holding Second Saturday art activities in response. They invited local and national street performers, musicians, and merchants to come to show off their skills and enthusiasm for using the loading dock bays and warehouses. Seeing the project develop each month and develop into a hub for community, art, and connection has truly been a blessing.

Ruby City | 150 Camp Street, San Antonio, Texas 78204, United States

To specifically serve the needs of the Hispanic community in the south-central region of San Antonio, St. Philip of Jesus Catholic Church was established in 1914. The church, which includes 800 families, has been helping local families since it was founded. Their average weekly offering barely covers the expenditures of running this modest small parish, but many parishioners faithfully provide their time and talents anyhow. Geographically, they are in a heavily Hispanic area of the city; as a result, they are a bilingual community that values inclusivity and friendliness. The collective worship is Christ-centered; as a result, the Holy Mass and other Sacred Liturgies are essential to the catholic faith.

St. Henry Catholic Church | 1619 S Flores Street, San Antonio, Texas 78204, United States

A group of German-speaking Catholics who attended the St. Joseph Catholic Church in downtown San Antonio petitioned the bishop for a school to be built in their community in the late 1800s. So, under the direction of Rev. Henry Pefferkorn, pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Henry’s Academy was established in 1893. St. Henry Catholic Church was founded in 1904 with Rev. Henry M. Wirtz as its first pastor as the German-speaking population of St. Joseph’s needed to grow.

The dynamic and culture of St. Henry Catholic Church have changed and grown throughout the years, but some features have remained the same, namely the parishioners’ steadfast faith and dedication. St. Henry Catholic Church, which has about 800 families, continues to point people to Christ by helping one another out in kindness and love.
