What is CBD and how does it work? | Mary Jane’s CBD Dispensary: Asheville, North Carolina / What is CBD?, Why CBD Doesn’t Get You High?, Why is CBD Research Needed?, Interested in Trying CBD?

May 06, 2019

You know your ABC’s, but do you know about CBD? With CBD seemingly appearing everywhere, you’ve probably heard about it at least once. You might also have some questions about it and why it’s becoming so popular. Fair enough. We’ve got you covered by letting you know about the basics regarding CBD.

What is CBD

Let’s start with at the beginning. CBD is short for cannabinol, which is one of many cannabinoids found in marijuana and hemp. THC is probably the most well-known cannabinoid, the one that gets you “high.” CBD has recently become popular because it has been identified as the cannabinoid that doesn’t get you “high” while offering the health and wellness benefits of cannabis.

How CBD Works with Your Body

Based on Medical News Today, “the body’s endocannabinoid system has two cannabinoid receptors: CB1 and CB2.

A majority of CB1 receptors are located in the brain and are associated with cognitive actions related to coordination, mood, thinking, memory, and appetite. The CB2 receptors, on the other hand, can be found in the immune system. This makes them more responsible for the body’s response to pain and inflammation. Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, attaches to the CB1 receptors, which explains why smoking or otherwise ingesting marijuana affects users on a cognitive level.

However, CBD impacts the CB2 receptors. And it does so indirectly, not by attaching to the CB2 receptor, but by enticing the body to make more of its own cannabinoids. This creates a positive effect on the body’s pain and inflammation responses.”

Why People Use CBD?

People have reported using CBD for many reasons. Some of the uses of CBD include anti-aging, pain, stress, anxiety, relaxation, sleep, and much more. Due to CBD’s versatility, it has been incorporated into many products. For example, it is becoming more common to find CBD infused with things like coffee, foods, beauty products, and the list goes on.

Is CBD Legal?

CBD can be derived from both marijuana and hemp. However, due to marijuana containing high amounts of THC than hemp, CBD derived from marijuana is not legal in all 50 states. CBD that is derived from hemp is legal in all 50 states due to the THC level in hemp being 0.3 percent or less. This amount is not enough to get you high or even fail a drug test. THC levels in marijuana can be as high as 30 percent.

Furthermore, after Trumped signed the recent farm bill act, it led to the FDA approving the benefits of topics such as lotions and creams containing CBD that is extracted from hemp. This had led to large retail stores like CVS and Walgreens to begin selling hemp-based CBD-infused products.

The Future of CBD

At this rate, it seems like CBD will one day become an everyday ingredient. Due to CBD's non-intoxicating effects while providing the many health and wellness benefits of cannabis, CBD could be here to stay. With CBD being infused in so many different types of products, it wouldn’t be hard to see it being in a lot of products you purchase in the future.
