The U.S. Army base in San Antonio, Texas is Fort Sam Houston. The military branch was named for 1836 and 1846 Sam Houston, the first elected president of the Republic of Texas. Fort Sam is the world’s largest military medical training base and the U.S. military medical command headquarters (MEDCOM). The base is the US North Army and South Army Command Headquarters. The US Navy Regional Recruiting Brigade, the Fifth Recruiting Brigade and Bethesda Detachment are also administered. It also comprises the American Naval Health Sciences Institute, the Military Entrance / Processing Station of San Antonio and the Center and School of the Army Medical Department (AMEDD). To order to consolidate the military, air forces and the navy, enrolled medical training programs, the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) at the Fort Sam base has recently expanded. In Defense Department history, the Joint Campus is the first and largest of its kind. The campus was launched in July 2008 and completed in September 2011 under the direction of the three-department leadership.

History

Since 1845, the United States Army has been headquartered in San Antonio City and Alamo City. Fort Sam was set up at a quadrangle site of 92 hectares in 1876. The headquarters, the barracks, medical assistance, preparation, logistics, and evacuation centers were Fort Sam. It is now spread over approximately 3,000 hectares, which is further expanded by construction of additional facilities. Before the American Civil War of 1865 Fort Sam’s headquarters controlled 25 percent of the military. Around 1910 and 1945, it was also the largest military base of the Continental US. Training in military aviation at the base began in 1910. In 1911 the CPX exercises were effected in conjunction with large-scale soldier maneuvers. in the base. The Division Triangular was established by field exercises in the 1930s. In 1917 the air rescue of the casualties took place in Fort Sam. It was the first medical training center of the U.S. Army and after the Second World War Brooke General Hospital was established.

Fort Sam was registered as a NHL in 1975 and was added to the list of National Historic Places Register (NHRP). We maintain a vast collection of military facilities and has about nine hundred historic buildings.

Design & Building 

Fort Sam undergoes upgrades or the construction of 78 major buildings within the framework of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC), which was implemented by the Federal Government in 2005. A total development area of around six million feet will be included in the $1 billion BRAC building program in San Antonio.

In August2009, a contract awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the construction of two barracks at Fort Sam Houston was awarded for a total of $118.7 m to Hensel Phelps Construction. The military staff are trained at METC in the barracks. The barracks accommodate 1,800 medical trainees with a total area of 558,000ft2. The METC also consists of three dormitories, which house 3,600 medical personnel from the Navy and Air Force and are partnered with Hensel Phelps.

A joint program managerial office is in charge of the San Antonio BRAC construction program. Members are the US Army Corps of Engineers ‘ District Bureau of Fort Worth, Navy Facilities Engineering Command, the Engineering and Environment Air Force Center and other private contractors. The basis also began refurbishment by public-private partnerships of historic buildings for reuse. For building projects at the foundation a minimum of $30 million is budgeted annually. Developments will enable the enlisted U.S. military training programs at Fort Sam Houston to be further consolidated. METC provides medical expertise in nuclear medicine, practicing medicine, dentistry, pharmaceuticals and radiology.
