For more than 100 years, the Santikos family has had an unparalleled theater experience. But you’re not going to find their biggest story on the marquee. It lies within the name of Santiko, its passion for helping others, and is rooted in San Antonio.

By the age of 19, Louis Santikos had left his home in Athens , Greece, to central Texas. In the moments between the stocking shelves and the baggage of canned goods in the local grocery store, Louis noticed something – a line of people waiting outside the Rex Theater across the street. Realizing the potential, he was working to save whatever he could. And in 1911, Louis bought the same theater, launching a legacy that would last generations.

As all filmgoers know, the origin story is only the beginning of an epic journey, and over the next few decades, the founder’s son , John L. Santikos, would expand the business to more than a dozen locations. By combining state-of-the-art technology with a comfortable atmosphere, John established Santikos as the first theater experience in the area.

During his lifetime, John made significant donations to local organizations and developed consistent partnerships with local arts organizations and charitable groups. But it was in his passing that John’s legacy would really have been realized. John would be giving the bulk of his estate to the San Antonio Area Foundation. Now, Santikos Entertainment – and its more than 1,500 employees – operates solely for the benefit of the San Antonio community.

Under the guidance of the Area Foundation, profits from every purchase made at the Santikos location go directly to fund the non-profit sector for the benefit of people in need, education, the arts and culture, and medical research.

It was John’s passion for entertainment that built Santikos Entertainment for 87 years. But it’s because of his commitment to giving and the patronage of filmgoers like you that he lives on.
