Walker Wellford, Jr. House | 135 St Albans Fairway, Memphis, TN 38111, United States
The Memphis Chapter of the American Institute of Architects considers this home to be “maybe the best example of the Art Deco-International style” in the city. Designed by George Awsumb and built in 1949, it was named Design of the Decade at the Memphis Millennium Celebration AIA. According to Judith Johnson, former president of Memphis Heritage and author of The Art of Architecture: Modernism in Memphis 1890-1980, the house was designed in 1938, but the material shortages were delayed due to the Second World War. The original owner of the home, Walker Wellford, was an engineer who designed a heat pump system, a heated driveway and a pump house. The use of natural stone, a steel-frame structure, reinforced concrete floors, and a third-floor roof terrace, make this a quintessential modern East Memphis home.
