La Villita – Top Place to Visit in San Antonio, Texas

In downtown San Antonio, Texas, United States, La Villita Historic Arts Village is an art group. There are art galleries, souvenir shops, donations, custom jewelry, pottery, and Mexican folk art imported, as well as several local restaurants. La Villita links with the Arneson River Theatre, the San Antonio River Walk and its indoor location. It is near to the Alamo, the Convention Center for Henry B. Gonzalez, Rivercenter Mall, and HemisFair Park. Most downtown restaurants are within walking range.

Located on the San Antonio River’s southern bank, La Villita was one of the first neighbourhoods in San Antonio. When the San Antonio River Walk developed in 1939, Mayor Maury Maverick’s town representatives helped to maintain this portion of the history of San Antonio. It was a Native American settlement and then a collection of primitive brush huts, called jacales, stationed nearby by the Spanish soldiers (and their Indian wives and children) at the Mission San Antonio de Valero (an active mission from about 1718 to 1793, now better known as the Alamo). After a flood in 1819, most of the huts were washed away, they were replaced by more substantial adobe houses.

European immigrants from Germany, France, and Italy migrated to the region in the late 19th century and quickly became involved in company and commerce: dealers, bankers, teachers, and craftsmen. The range of architectural types seen in the buildings of La Villita reflect the cultural combination, from the poor’s one-room households to the affluent ‘ bigger houses.

La Villita just 5 minutes from the riverwalk shocked me beautifully. Very ancient village complete of art stores, some of them more exciting than others, but very friendly people! When I walked there was almost no one, and all the shopkeepers were so extremely lovely! I finished up talking with everybody. I also discovered a beautiful jewelry of leather. The stores are primarily art, but garments and jewelry are also available. The cafe provides a wide range of products for breakfast and dinner and it was very nice. I’d suggest that you visit La Villita. Someone informed me there was a good one, too.
