Things to Do Near Seaworld – Leon Creek Greenway | Smoke & Vape Culebra

8199 Mainland Rd San Antonio, TX 78250

Leon Creek Greenway is a tranquil oasis through western San Antonio. The main pathway begins at Loop 1604 and winds its way south for 18 miles along the creek. It’s fairly flat with some gentle slopes and is dotted with small ponds, including Earl Scott Pond near its northern end, which is home to a variety of birds and wildlife.

The trail runs adjacent to many parks, including O.P. Schnabel Park, known for its natural beauty, steep cliffs, and many amenities, including athletic fields, picnic tables, nature trails, and a YMCA facility.

Leon Creek Greenway is a linear park that connects the historic district of downtown Leon Springs with urban neighborhoods, schools, and commercial centers in northwest San Antonio.

This green space provides recreation opportunities such as hiking and biking while also providing ecological benefits to the city. It was designed in response to rapid growth which has left little remaining undeveloped land for preservation. The project has been underway since 2006 but it’s finally ready for you to explore!

The trails are made up of various surface materials including asphalt concrete boardwalk bridges, decomposed granite gravel mulch, natural stone pavers sandstone slabs topsoil wood chips; these provide both travel comfort and environmental sustainability.

Leon Creek Greenway Trails

Leon Creek Greenway Trails is a 14 mile long trail system that connects Leon Creek to the Great Trinity Forest. The trails are used for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Nature lovers will enjoy the sights of several species of birds including blue jays, cardinals, cedar waxwings and more.

The trails also lead to a number of historic sites including: an old settler’s home built in 1833 by John Bremond; the site of one of Texas’ earliest battles with Native Americans from 1836-1837; and a 1930s era rock quarry where granite was mined for buildings such as Dallas City Hall and Fort Worth’s Tarrant County Courthouse.

Mountain Biking Leon Creek

Leon Creek is a beautiful and serene place to mountain bike. It’s a perfect place for beginners and advanced riders alike, but be mindful of the creek. The water can get up to around six feet deep in some places. The beauty of this trail is that it has something to offer everyone, whether you’re looking for steep climbs, fast descents, or easy pedaling on smooth dirt paths.  Mountain biking down there requires care and attention for safety. If you are looking for an exhilarating ride with dips and climbs, this may not be your best bet! Once you get to the top of the hill there are sweeping views of downtown San Antonio and Leon Valley!

GETTING THERE

Although there are off road trail crossings at several points on the greenway, the best place to start to access the majority of this trail system is the Trailhead near De Zavala and Babcock. Take the paved trail south and you’ll find lots of different off-road spurs, which often follow the paved trail but will also lead to different areas of varying difficulty. You can also head just a little north, under the Babcock Rd bridge and when you see the paved trail veer left you will see different spurs off of the main trail and that left fork that leads you to the Bamberger Nature Park loop.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this article about the newest addition to the city of San Diego. The project has been underway since 2006 and is finally ready for public use, so we encourage you to visit them! If not, keep an eye out in your local news or newspaper.
