The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law University is a law school accredited by the American Bar Association, and is the only law school in Memphis , Tennessee. After the founding of the law school in 1962 the school has been affiliated with the University of Memphis. The school was named in memory of Cecil Clarence Humphreys, former President of the University. Previously known as U of M Law, Memphis Law, or Memphis Law College.

According to the 2017 ABA-required disclosures by Memphis Law, 69.69 percent of the 2017 Class secured full-time, long-term, bar-passage jobs after graduation, excluding solo practitioners.

History

The law school was known as Memphis State University College of Law in 1962. Three years later it received accreditation to ABA in 1965. Recent Memphis businessman Herbert Herff was a major benefactor to Memphis University. Herff left the bulk of his estate in trust with the State of Tennessee for the university’s benefit when he died in 1966. The Herbert Herff Presidential Law Scholarships and the Herbert Herff Chair of Excellence in Law are among the grants that his foundation offers.

Prior to the establishment of the law school, there were several other law schools in Memphis, including the Memphis Law School, and the Southern Law School (not to be confused with the Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge, LA), both of which eventually merged with the Memphis State University Law School. Notwithstanding the titles, neither Southern Law University nor the early Memphis Law School had academic ties, but instead offered part-time legal education programs, while both were accredited by the Law Examiners’ State Board.

In 2001 the law school joined American Law Schools Association (AALS). Reflecting the increased popularity of the law school, the Tennessee Supreme Court met on 4 November 2010 at the University of Memphis Law School. The law school celebrated its half centenary in September 2012.

Post-graduation employment

According to the official 2013 ABA-required disclosures from Memphis Law, 60.5 percent of the 2013 Class attained full-time, long-term, bar-passage-required jobs nine months after graduation, excluding solo practitioners. In terms of the percentage of 2013 graduates with non-school-funded, full-time, long-term bar passage, the school ranked 75th out of the 201 ABA-approved law schools required jobs nine months post graduation.

Memphis Law School’s underemployment transparency score is 23.4 percent, reflecting the 2013 unemployed class number, pursuing an additional degree, or working in a non-professional, short-term, or part-time position nine months after graduation. 83.1 percent of the 2013 Class was working at some extent while 15.3 percent remained unemployed at graduation for nine months.
