Memphis’ first dog park, located near the Shelby County Schools Headquarters in Avery, opened in 2010. Service time for the park is 6 a.m.—8 p.m. From March 15—October. 31 a.m. and 6 a.m.—6 p.m. From November 15 to March 14.

The “off leash” fenced in the park has room for dogs under 25 pounds and over 25 pounds. Biodegradable doggie garbage bags are given so that owners can help keep the park clean and free of pet waste. The park has benches where owners can rest and watch the dogs play. In order for dogs to have a safe and fun environment in which to play, all dogs must be licensed and vaccinated / immunized, and each dog owner is responsible for the actions and action of the dog.

A dog park like Snowden Dog Park is a park for dogs to exercise and play off-leash in a controlled environment under the supervision of their owners.

Dog parks like Snowden have a number of facilities, but they normally provide a 4′ to 6′ fence, separate double-door entrance and exit points, adequate drainage, human benches, shade for hot days, parking near the site, water, pooper-scooper to pick up and dispose of animal waste in covered garbage cans, and frequent maintenance and cleaning of the grounds. Dog parks can also provide wheelchair access, a swimming pool and a separate enclosure for small dogs.

Some Dog Parks have separate playgrounds for big and small dogs. Others have a wide room for dogs of all sizes. There is controversy on this topic, as some believe that dogs should be separated by size, while others feel that dogs of all sizes should and should be socialized together.

A public dog park like Snowden is normally a fenced outdoor area where people and their dogs can play together. Similarly, a dog run is a smaller fenced area, built for the same purpose, and is mostly found within an existing park. Public dog parks are most often run by the city or county parks department and are also part of a park. As the names mean, these places offer dogs off-leash play areas where their owners can enjoy a park-like environment and a chance to socialize with other canines and their owners. Public dog parks are being developed across the country and deliver a wealth of benefits to dogs, dog owners and the community as a whole. Unless they are well lit, most public dog parks are open to the public from dawn to dusk. Some public dog parks have vaccination standards but are not usually staffed or enforced unless there is some sort of incident that is reported to the care of animals.
