The Formal Gardens are a well-known feature of Memphis’s Overton Park. The garden spans from Morrie Moss Lane to Veterans Plaza and was founded in 1904-1905, with its original design remaining unchanged over the years due to how iconic it is. It has remained this way since then because many locals still see it as an homage (a memorial) for Clara Conway who died in 1936 after suffering a great loss during a storm that nearly demolished her pergola; however, nobody knows what became of her family or relatives afterward which makes the subject rather mysterious.

In 2012, the gardens were given a much-needed facelift. Thanks to a kind contributor, the Overton Park Conservancy was able to acquire some new plants for their flowerbeds. The conservancy collaborated with local landscape designer Tom Pellett who created a planting scheme that used more perennials and native species so they might establish structure over time. This will lessen maintenance as well as water use and upkeep in the future.
The gardens are adorned with seasonal flowers that have been arranged in a symmetrical pattern. The trees surrounding the garden provide an excellent backdrop to demonstrate these gorgeous colors, which include evergreen and deciduous species of plants. Despite changes over time, this arrangement has remained mostly unchanged due to its dedication as one of the main focal points within the park itself.
