Bacon Park Golf Course

1 Shorty Cooper Rd, Savannah, GA 31406, United States

For as long as most people can remember, Bacon Park Golf Course has been the epicenter of Savannah golf. The city of Savannah owns the course, which was constructed by renowned golf architect Donald Ross in 1926. Actually, the Bacon Park course that we play and enjoy was originally part of a 72-hole layout. Two were constructed, but one was abandoned around 1940. Bacon Park was expanded by nine holes in 1985, bringing the total number of holes to 27. The course's management contract was given to OC Welch Golf Properties in 2014, and the most extensive golf restoration in Savannah's history began.

Mr. Welch enlisted the help of renowned golf architect Richard Mandell of Pinehurst, North Carolina, to recreate Bacon Park's original design, which was conceived by Donald Ross over a century ago. Mr. Mandell was able to piece together the history of the original Donald Ross course using Ross' original field sketches, aerial images from 1951 and 1971, and Mr. Welch's memory. The end product is a work of art that feels like a step back in time to what Donald Ross envisioned nearly a century ago.

Each hole on the course is given a name that describes the nature of the hole in relation to the overall layout. Getaway, Hogback, Lowland, Overbrook, Crooked Valley, Blind Tom, The Stretch, Long View, and Dead Aim are among the first nine. The Narrows, No-Foolin, Canal, Sore Thumb, Spitball, Belly Acres, Triangle, The Oak, and Home make up the second nine. The course is a superbly crafted demonstration of all of Donald Ross' outstanding attributes. On a course that stretches out to just 6,600 yards from the back tees, slanted greens, undulating fairways, sophisticated bunkering, and towering oak trees defend par. Bacon Park, like other Ross courses, is a course that draws golfers returning for more.

For more than 50 years, Bacon Park has hosted the Savannah City Amateur, and the names on the City Am trophy include some of the most well-known golfers to ever play in Savannah. Every year, the city's greatest amateur golfers compete at the Donald Ross for the title of Savannah's best golfer. And on the final nine of the final round each year, a different story is told. With six City Am victories, Savannah golf veteran John Skeadas SR holds the record, but there is always a new generation of players coming up at Bacon Park who could be the next great champion.

The facility has always been a hub of community activity, and Bacon Park hosts charity golf tournaments, family nights and junior golf events on a regular basis. It's been said that Savannah is a big small town, and you don't have to look far to find a friendly face at Bacon Park Golf Course.
