Can You Take Too Much Cbd?

First: What dose is considered “too much?”

As a disclaimer: not many studies have been conducted on toxic CBD levels. From an ethical point of view, that would be difficult to justify. However, according to a study published in Current Drug Safety in 2011, the "toxic" dose of CBD comes from 20,000 mg of CBD everywhere, taken almost all at once.

To understand this, it is important to note that for most cases, the recommended starting dose is about 5-20 mg per day. Although studies have been performed on dosages of about 1500 mg per day, most tinctures in a whole bottle contain between 100 and 1500. That means that, depending on the concentration of CBD in the bottles, somebody would need to ingest between 13 and 200 whole bottles of CBD tincture at once. It's a difficult stretch to consider.

Simply put: when taken at recommended doses, or, even above recommended daily doses, the average CBD user does not need to worry about taking too much.

Is a “toxic” dose of CBD lethal?

The answer to this question might surprise you. Unlike other drugs, it is not widely considered that the toxic dose (CBD 20,000 mg) is lethal. It may be possible–lethal doses were obtained in monkeys in the same study mentioned above in Current Drug Safety; but it would be immoral to research in humans.

The general consensus between experts and even the World Health Organization is that CBD is likely to cause extreme drowsiness, lethargy, upset stomach, nausea and diarrhoea, and other uncomfortable, disorienting side effects, not death, even in extremely large doses. Other interesting findings presented by the WHO include and derived from a 2011 study include:

  • In large doses, CBD effects tumour cells, but has little effect in non-tumour cells.
  • Limited research shows no effect on embryonic development.
  • CBD may cause hormonal changes, yet, these findings are unclear.
  • CBD has “no effect on a wide range of physiological and biochemical parameters or significant effects on animal behaviour unless extremely high doses are administered… in excess of 150 mg/kg iv as an acute dose or in excess of 30 mg/kg orally daily for 90 days.”
  • CBD may be associated with drug interactions, but this is not yet clear.

In fact, CBD is one of the only drugs that the WHO considers to have no major side effects or dependence risk. This does not mean that it is a good idea for "testing" the toxic dose of CBD. It does, however, offer reassurance that consumers of CBD should experiment with different doses in order to find one that is appropriate for their particular needs.

CBD vs. THC

It is well-known that CBD varies greatly from its counterpart cannabinoid, THC.

THC is the cannabinoid responsible for traditional marijuana-related "high" use. Unlike CBD, it has toxic side effects that are potentially lethal.

Numerous serious side effects from THC ingestion and inhalation were found in a 2019 study including:

  • Hypotension
  • Panic/anxiety
  • Muscle spasms
  • Respiratory depression and distress
  • Reduced memory function
  • Delirium
  • Ataxia
  • Increased risk of heart attack
  • Lethargy
  • Hyperkinesis

No official study has given a lethal dose of THC, but when taken orally by pediatric patients, serious symptoms that occur from anywhere above 7.5 mg / m2 inhaled in adults and from 5-300 mg.

Now, enjoy CBD with ease

The bottom line is this: CBD is safe even in doses that are reasonably high. Like anything, if recklessly consumed, it may have negative side effects, but in contrast with other drugs, even other cannabinoids, these side effects are mild. Here’s to the – healthy, natural – CBD life.
