Fort Jackson - Top Places to Visit in Savannah

Fort Jackson

1 Fort Jackson Rd, Savannah, GA 31404

This place really enjoyed visiting a lovely day in October. For history buffs, it's a must. The performers were pretty good. They are able to respond to any queries and very friendly. A fun cannon demonstration took place. Very recommended. Very recommended. Fun spot to feel what the soldiers suffered during the day. With firearms and even a canon, they gave demonstrators. The waterfront is great, and you can invest just an hour and experience the whole thing. Everybody's great history lecture. The people here are dedicated to the preservation and sharing of the past. Further historical sites such as this are needed here.

Situated one kilometer East of the river Savannah on the Georgian Sea River, Fort James Jackson (usually shortened to Fort Jackson) is an improved 19th century fort. This contains the Maritime Museum of Fort Jackson.

Between 1808 and 1812 the Fort Jackson was built to protect the town of Savannah against sea attack. It was one of three forts of the confederation that protected Savannah from Union troops during the American Civil War (the other two being Fort McAllister and Fort Pulaski). In 1862, a ship captained by a escaping slave, Robert Smalls, shelled Fort Jackson.

In December 1864, when the Union army headed by William T. Sherman conquered Savannah by road, it almost immediately taken Fort Jackson. Between 1884 and 1905 the fort was called Fort Oglethorpe and was little used by the U.S. military. In 1924, the structure was purchased for storage by the community of Savannah and was fully renovated in the 1970s. In 2000 it was designated a National Historic Site. Fort Jackson lies on the 1 Fort Jackson Road on the Islands Expressway between Savannah and Fort Pulaski and Tybee Island Town[3]. Fort Jackson is a museum operated by the Coastal Heritage Society and owned by the state of Georgia. The fort has a cannon epidemic demonstration every day during the season.
