About the Hamilton Neighborhood in Memphis, Tennessee

Hamilton is located in the southern portion of Memphis, Tennessee. It's named after the Green Polonius of Hamilton. He was an American educator, principal, and author, prominent in the African-American community of Memphis , Tennessee. Hamilton was born in Memphis and graduated in 1882 from the LeMoyne Normal Institute. He taught and then continued his studies at Rust College and Columbia University before becoming principal at the first Memphis High School for African Americans, Kortrecht College. The Pine Hill Links opened in 1932. The 18-hole "Pine Hill" course at The Links At Pine Hill facility in Memphis, Tennessee features 5,908 yards of golf from the longest tees to a par of 71 built by Kevin Tucker. Collared shirts and no tank tops or cutoffs are needed.

Located in the heart of Midtown, Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium offers several choices that can be tailored for your event programming. It's the ideal venue for concerts, sporting activities, parties, motorsport events and more! There are individual function spaces situated in the Recruitment Lounge, the Stadium Club and the Media Work Room for corporate activities, celebrations, meetings and any private activity.

Memphis Fairgrounds Park has been covering 168 acres in Midtown Memphis since 1897. Since then, the park has been used for numerous public events and activities. Until 1912, there was a racetrack. It was a fairground from 1912 to 2008, when the Mid-South Fair moved to Desoto County. The field is now used by the Liberty Cup, the Children's Museum, Fairview Middle School, and now the Kroc Core of the Salvation Army. Memphians remember the Fairgrounds Amusement Park-especially the Pippin Roller Coaster and the Grand Carousel.

Mid-South Coliseum is the indoor arena of Memphis , Tennessee. The facility was opened in 1963 and became known for hosting concerts and professional wrestling activities. The Coliseum was closed in 2006. At the end of the 2010s, plans were made to help maintain and refurbish the arena as part of the broader regeneration of the surrounding city. The Mid-South Coliseum was home to the first Central Hockey League team, the Memphis Wings (later the Memphis South Stars) from 1964 to 1969. Piping was built under the surface of the Coliseum floor to accommodate hockey. The ice was always left intact between games, enabling the people of Memphis to take part in public skating.

Parks, Schools & Other Points of Interest in Hamilton

Hamilton is also home to some amazing parks, schools, public libraries and schools for its citizens to enjoy.  These facilities are all world-class, beautifully maintained and clean so residents of surrounding communities often visit to enjoy them.  Here’s a short list all located in Hamilton:  

 

Hamilton opened its doors as a Junior High School in 1941. The name was changed to Hamilton High School in 1943. The school was named after author and educator Green Polonius (G.P.) Hamilton. G.P. Hamilton was the first principal for the first public high.

In August 2010, Memphis College Preparatory Elementary School opened its doors to an inaugural class of kindergarten learners, the 2027 college class. Per year, the school has extended one grade level since it opened before they completed their full Kindergarten expansion to Fifth Grade. Their mission is to prepare kindergarten students through fifth grade with the base of academic and ethical character needed to succeed in school and life. Their classrooms are named after colleges and their students prepare to complete their college graduation journey every day.

The park is situated in South Memphis, close to Hamilton High School. It is a 34-acre park and community center with basketball courts, a picnic area and a baseball field. The new pavilion replaces an older one badly damaged by a tree.

A&R Bar-B-Q was founded as a fast food take-out restaurant by Andrew & Rose Pollard in 1983. It has evolved over the years, offering customers the choice of dining as well as catering. A very limited menu offered barbecue and hamburgers and walk-in customer service only when the business first opened. But as the company became a restaurant, the restaurant grew. For the huge lunch crowds that are now served everyday, a seating area was added to accommodate 75-80 people.
