Every year, they continue their successful quest to satisfy Texans' thirst for big selections and lower prices.
The original Spec was opened in Houston in 1962. Carroll B, man. Jackson and Carolynn Jackson founded the store. "Spec" Jackson was trying to work for himself and make enough money so that Carolynn wouldn't have to work. The name of the store, Spec's, originated from his nickname, which refers to his spectacles. Jackson spent $7,000 on "Spec" to open his first store.
In 1971, the daughter of Jackson, Lindy, and her husband, John Rydman, joined the business after graduating from college. Lindy and John have learned business from the ground up. Together, the Jacksons and Rydmans have placed Spec's in the spotlight of the world. With the introduction of wines in 1974, John Rydman created even more excitement about Specs with the breadth of wine selection and pricing offered in Houston.
In order to save time serving its customers, "Spec" Jackson used roller skates to zip around its new 15,000 square foot store in 1973. People flock to the store just to see "man on skates."
In the late '80s, Spec entered the food business with po' boy sandwiches, crackers and cheese to satisfy customers' requests. It was just the beginning of what was to become a huge selection of gourmet items from all over the world. In 1995, the third generation family, Lisa Rydman, joined the Spec team. It is a primary business component and proud to be part of a historic family business.
In 2005, Lindy and John Rydman won the ERNST & YOUNG "ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR" AWARD. The phenomenal growth of Spec now includes 24 stores and 475 employees across the Greater Houston Area. In 2007, Spec's opened three stores in the Austin area. In the next few years, Spec will expand to San Antonio, Killeen, El Paso, Dallas, Fort Worth, Lubbock and all over Texas.
The Spec's Charitable Foundation hosted its 20th Annual Vintage Virtuoso event, which raised more than $3.5 million to support the education and community programs of the Houston Symphony in 2016. Spec's has been your Texas go-to for good times and gourmet food for 55 years. Now, with more than 100 stores across Texas, and more on the way, they’re bringing savings and selection to every corner of the Lone Star State.
