Interstate 10(I-10) is the largest East–West Interstate Highway in the South of the United States. In the U.S. state of Texas, it stretches east from Anthony, on the border with New Mexico, through El Paso, San Antonio and Houston, to the border with Louisiana in Orange, Texas. At just under 880 miles (1,420 km), the Texas I-10 portion, maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation, is the longest continuous untolled highway in North America controlled by a single authority. It is also the longest segment of the highway with a single designation in a single state.
I-10 leaves the Rio Grande, going primarily eastward. Just before reaching Van Horn, I-10 leaves the Mountain Time Zone and enters the Central Time Zone at the intersection of the counties of Hudspeth and Culberson. Just east of Portland, the westernI-20 terminal intersects withI-10. I-20 is going northeast towards Dallas-Fort Worth andI-10 is heading east.
The US 67 runs parallel to theI-10 for a stretch and the La Entrada al Pacifico trade corridor is part of this I-10 route. Next to the interchange, I-10 starts a more southeasterly direction as it heads towards the metropolitan area of San Antonio. Near Comfort, I-10 and US 87 begin a rivalry that goes on to San Antonio.
On the northwest side, I-10 is known as the McDermott Freeway, named for Robert F. McDermott, former dean of the United States Air Force Academy, as well as CEO of San Antonio, USAA. The highway approaches the city at the same time as US 87 from the north and runs further north-south to downtown than the east-west sign on the Interstate Highway. From Loop 1604 to downtown, the northern section serves one of the fastest growing areas of the city.
BetweenI-610andI-45 west of downtown, there are at least five main lanes in each direction. Before 2008, this section had traditionally been the largest section ofI-10 in the Houston area and the only one with a significant portion below grade. A project completed in 2014 added an additional auxiliary lane in each direction between Shepherd Drive and Taylor Street.
In addition, the eastbound feeder road that ends at Studemont was extended to Taylor Street. When I-10 passes through downtown, it connects with I-45 and I-69/US 59. All interchanges have left exits, allowing multiple lane shifts through traffic. I-10 provides access to Minute Maid Park, home to the Houston Astros, as well as the University of Houston–Downtown campus.
