Loop 1604, also known as Charles W. Anderson Loop, is an outer highway loop that circles San Antonio, Texas, roughly 95.6 miles (153.9 km). Which started as a two-lane highway has been extended to a four-lane highway along its northern stretch from US Hwy 90 West to Kitty Hawk Rd East. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is preparing to widen this section of the freeway from 4 general-purpose lanes to 8 general-purpose lanes and 2 HOV lanes from Bandera Rd toI-35. Loop 1604 is named for former Bexar County Judge Charles W. Anderson, who died of cancer in 1964 after sitting on the bench for 25 years.
Loop 1604 forms a full loop around the city of San Antonio and is the outer of two loops around the city, the inner loop being I-410. The path has sections that are constructed to the specifications of the freeway, portions designed as a divided highway, and portions that are just a two-lane rural road. As withI-410, the inner loop of the city, the northern half is more urbanized and the southern half, for the most part, remains agricultural.
The loop officially starts and ends at I-10 East of San Antonio. Heading south fromI-10 as a two-lane road, it turns southeast and crosses FM 1346, FM 1518, and FM 3465, turning south to reach a junction with US 87 in Lone Oak. Continuing south, Loop 1604 has a second intersection with FM 3465, a junction with FM 3432 as the road turns southwest and a junction with US 181 near Calaveras Lake. Heading southwest from US 181, the highway crosses FM 327 as it approaches the city of Elmendorf. It crosses FM 327 again as it leaves Elmendorf towards the southwest. At FM 1303, Loop 1604 turns west before a junction with I-37. Continuing west through the southern portions of Bexar County, the loop crosses FM 1937 (South Flores Road) and FM 3499 before the US 281 interchange. The highway heads west to the intersection with SH 16, passing south of the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas factory. The highway continues west and begins to curve north as it approaches the city limits of Somerset and the intersection with FM 2790 (Somerset Road). At the completion of the turn to the north as it exits Somerset, Loop 1604 heads north to the intersection withI-35. The highway heads north after the I-35 junction to the FM 2536 (Old Pearsall Road) junction before the US 90 junction.
