Shelby Farms Park

6903 Great View Dr N, Memphis, TN 38134, United States

Shelby Farms, located in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, is one of the 20 largest urban parks in the United States. With an area of 4,500 acres (1,800 ha), it occupies more than five times the area of Central Park in New York City with an area of 843 acres (341 ha).

Lakes, natural forests and wetlands provide natural environments for several smaller species in the vicinity of urban metropolitan areas. Wildlife can be seen from the many trails in the park in their natural surroundings. Shelby Farms Park is the location of a bison herd.

The land that forms the Shelby Farms Park was derived from property that was privately owned in the 19th century. In 1825, humanist reformer Frances Wright created the Nashoba Commune on 670 acres (of a total of 1,940 acres) north of Wolf River, now part of Shelby Farms Park and Agricenter Internationals. The goal of the commune was to provide practical and cultural education in order to emancipate the slaves after they had worked out their costs. The remains of a settlement at the end of the 19th century are still present in the new park.

Shelby Farms Park is a special location and a perfect setting for special events! Indoor and outdoor venues are available for meetings, picnics, gatherings, parties, galas, weddings and more! The best part of it? Your rental fees finance the running of the Park.

Shelby Farms Park is a people-powered park—more than 80 percent of the Park's $5.2 million operating budget comes from contributions and profits! Shelby Farms Park and Greenline are owned and run by Shelby Farms Park Conservancy, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The Shelby Farms Greenline is a 10.65-mile (17.14 km) multi-purpose urban railroad extending from Shelby Farms to Tillman Street in Binghampton, near Midtown, Memphis. The trail was built on a closed CSX railway line. Shelby Farms Greenline is owned and run by Shelby Farms Park Conservancy, a non-profit group that also operates Shelby Farms Park. The Greenline was opened in October 2010. Shelby Farms Greenline is the longest continuous urban trail in the Memphis area.[citation needed] It is also the first track in Tennessee to use a pedestrian hybrid beacon at two major crossings: Highland and Graham.

Horseback riding is permitted in areas of the park and on a few trails. Horses can be rented out as well. A dedicated runway to start and land miniature radio control aircraft is available for public use in the park. The 18-hole disk golf course is situated near the park's welcome centre.
