Blue Star Contemporary is a non-profit organization of contemporary art located in San Antonio, Texas. In 1986, after the success of the Blue Star Show, a group of artists produced a show featuring works by local contemporary artists in the former Blue Star Ice and Cold Storage warehouse. Blue Star Contemporary is the longest non-profit contemporary art space in the region. Blue Star Contemporary, also known as BSC, is managed by Mary Heathcott, Executive Director. An annual open call for musicians from Texas, the United States and abroad.
Blue Star Contemporary is located in a refurbished warehouse in the Blue Star Arts District, a mixed-use community of lofts, condos, galleries, art studios, retail stores and restaurants. The Blue Star Arts Complex stops on the VIA Metropolitan Transit VIVA Culture bus route. BSC is part of the King Williams Cultural Arts District of South Town and is situated along the San Antonio River Walk.
The Blue Star Contemporary is situated at the heart of San Antonio's First Friday Art Walk, an event that takes place on the first Friday of each month and is organized to provide "a free showcase of the art community in San Antonio." The Blue Star Contemporary is regarded as a revitalizing force for the arts district and surrounding neighborhoods. The Contemporary Art Month (CAM), San Antonio's month-long celebration of local contemporary art in July, began in the museum.
Today, BSC serves as an incubator of contemporary art, holding more than 20 exhibits annually within its four on-site galleries and several off-site locations within the city. Contemporary art is full of complex concepts, and our exhibits and public programs turn multi-faceted ideas into age-appropriate discussions and stimulating, immersive experiences. Recent exhibits have dealt with changing environments, globalization, connectivity, changing realities, nostalgia, family and dictatorial regimes. Artists offer global viewpoints that promote empathy and compassion, which are incredibly valuable in this highly divisive period.
The BSC has a wide-ranging influence. As a WAGE-certified company, BSC promotes fair compensation for creative work. BSC removes barriers to participation in the arts and supports students, leading to an improvement in high school graduation and college readiness. Commitment to the arts fosters emotional intelligence and self-expression. BSC helps people connect, solve problems, and serve others— the skills that enhance the quality of life of our entire community.
