San Antonio Parks provide an opportunity for people to spend time on outdoor leisure with fresh air, sunlight, and activity offered for visitors. Enjoy the scenery, take a walk and de-stress. Studies show that people who spend time in parks are less likely to become ill, which means less time from school and work, as well as lower healthcare costs and better overall health.
Southside Lions Park is a 600-acre tract that was acquired in 1944 and 1964 by the City from the George W. Brackenridge family. The park, also known as Hi-Lions Park, takes its name from the group that advocated for public park land protection of the city. In 1944 the City purchased 346.45 acres for landfill purposes from the Brackenridge estate. Highland Park area residents and Highland Park Lions Club members successfully appealed to the City to use the land as a park rather than a landfill. In 1953, 22 acres had been donated to the San Antonio Independent School District for the construction of Highlands High School prior to the park's creation.
Funds from the 1994 Quality of Life bond issue were provided for trails and lighting upgrades. A new playground has also been installed and additional changes and upgrades have been made to the community centre, including gym renovation and a dance studio / multi-use area.
