In the 1970s, Franklin Houser, a retired San Antonio lawyer, bought the house and 103 acres as a get-away for his family. He found pleasure in learning about grapes, which became a passion for wine making. It all began in 1992 with "Bonnie's Vineyard" In just a few short years, he opened the tasting room and made his first wine in 1998. In 2000, Mr. Houser planted Lenoir 'Black Spanish' grapes with such success that Dry Comal is regarded as the 'pioneer' of black Spanish grapes in Texas.
Mr. Houser was exploring retirement options, searching for new winery owners. In 2017, he found the family he was searching for The Romero from Ft. Worth, guy. Ralphael Romero Sr. is a Mexican immigrant of the first generation. He spent his summers at a family farm studying English and learning about fruit farming. His grandfather insisted that he immigrate and live the "American dream." In 1981, he formed the mother company of vineyards, R&D Equipment Co. named after "Ralph" and his lovely bride, Dora.
Ralph Sr. is a proud Texan who has focused on adding the character to their wines. Dry Comal Creek is now selling 100% Texas grape wines. Their new winemaker is Seth Urbanek, a Texan native with experience in the wine-making industry.
