Hotel Emma, once a 19th-century brewhouse, is a 146-room luxury hotel in the historic Pearl District of San Antonio , Texas, United States. It has a library, a bar, a club room, a grocery store and a restaurant. Hotel Emma is named after Pearl President Otto Koehler 's wife, Emma Koehler.
The structure was originally built as the City Brewery (later Pearl Brewery) in 1894 on 23 acres, and was the tallest building in San Antonio for a period. It was designed by architect August Maritzen of Chicago at Seco
Hotel Emma was an American brewery founded in 1881 as the J.B. prior to becoming a hotel. Behloradsky Brewery. The San Antonio Brewing Association acquired the firm in 1883. By 1916, Pearl was Texas' largest brewery and the only Prohibition brewery to thrive. The brewery closed officially in 2001. Silver Ventures, Inc. acquired the land in 2002.
Hotel Emma is named after Pearl President Otto Koehler 's wife, Emma Koehler. Emma took over as Pearl's CEO after the death of her husband in 1914. Emma kept the doors of the brewery open during Prohibition by expanding business lines to include auto repair, soft drinks, ice cream and dry cleaning. This avoided the closure of the brewery and spared hundreds of individuals from losing their jobs. Even though she retired in 1933, Emma remained active in the Pearl operations behind the scenes until her death in 1947.
With three architects and design firms secured: Three Living Architecture; Roman and Williams; and Powell & Carson Architects & Planners, construction for Hotel Emma began on December 10, 2012. Current equipment and parts were preserved, as well as the original 134-foot brewery tower, retaining much of the original architectural integrity and design, resulting in a number of different architectural styles. On November 12, 2015, the Hotel Emma opened.
The hotel provides floor space of more than 160,000 square feet, with conference and venue space of 6,000 square feet. For parties, receptions and meetings, it even provides cellar rooms. The hotel has two towers; the original tower with eight floors stands at 134 feet, and the newly built tower with six floors stands at 78 feet.
Architects and designers focused on maintaining as much of the original structure and equipment as possible in the planning , design and building, incorporating these elements into the overall design.
