The Menger Hotel is a historic hotel located in downtown San Antonio , Texas, USA. It is located where the Battle of Alamo took place.
William and Mary Menger opened the Hotel Menger in San Antonio's Alamo Plaza in 1859. The plans for the hotel were based on the popularity of William Menger's brewery. The Mengers sold the property to the Kampmann family in 1881. William Menger had emigrated to America from Germany in 1847. Menger settled in San Antonio and resumed his previous business as a cooper and brewer. Menger brought beer to San Antonio with his German roots. In 1855, he opened the Menger Brewery on the battle-grounds of the Alamo (now known as the Alamo Plaza).
In 1858, the Mengers hired an architect, John M. Fries, and a contractor, J. H. Kampmann, to complete the two-story, 50-room hotel in San Antonio , Texas, which became a stop on the Chisholm Trail, where cattle ranchers were able to replenish their supplies while cattlemen were selling and buying their livestock. Until this time, most of the apartments in San Antonio were boarding houses, and there were few breweries. The Menger Hotel, opened in February 1859, served as a meeting place for the cattle barons and was an immediate success; many cattle business transactions were carried out over the years in the hotel lobby. A marker in today's hotel courtyard commemorates the Chisholm Trail.
A worthy three-star hotel holder, San Antonio's Menger Hotel is the oldest continuously operating hotel to the west of Mississippi and links the border-town history of this texan city with its vibrant, diverse present. Built in 1879, this centrally located establishment is located next to the Alamo, just a block from the shops of the famous River Walk and the Children's Museum.
There are 316 non-smoking guest rooms on five floors of the Menger Hotel, some with a private balcony overlooking the courtyard, the pool or the Alamo. In-room technology includes premium cable TV channels, a video game console, the ability to stay connected with Wi-Fi access, and wake-up calls on a direct dial telephone. In addition, ceiling fans and air conditioning ensure that things remain comfortable, such as daily housekeeping routines, bed linen turndowns, and complimentary toiletries in the en-suite bathroom. The accommodation also includes ironing facilities, a radio clock, a desk and extra beds or children's cots on request.
Those staying at the Menger Hotel can stroll through the Spanish Garden, relax in the rocking chair on the porch, enjoy the stone fountain, relax in the sauna, dive in the heated outdoor pool under the palm trees, or simply soak in the hot tub. The fitness center means that the health nuts can keep up with the workout regime, and the on-site boutique spa offers relaxing massages. With more than 11,600 square feet of versatile meeting space, including the Plaza Ballroom alongside nine event rooms, patrons wishing to hold functions are well catered for while business services allow work to continue uninterruptedly. The 24-hour reception desk is equipped with a safety deposit box and the elegant lobby, with a cozy fireplace, is a lovely spot to browse the newspapers or to warm up with a hot drink.
The stately Colonial Room Restaurant, with views over the lush tropical garden, and the Menger Bar are two of the original features of the building. Guests can expect delicious food in the redolent atmosphere of the past; Teddy Roosevelt allegedly recruited some of his Rough Riders from the pub-style bar, built in 1887.
