Louis (pronounced Lou-ee) Dembitz Brandeis is named after the ninth high school in the Northside Independent School District, which opened in San Antonio in 2008 and is rated as a 6A high school in the state of Texas. Brandeis High School currently has more than 2,800 students. Louis D. Brandeis was born in Kentucky in 1856 and entered Harvard Law at the age of nineteen. He graduated as a Valedictorian in his class in 1877, even though he had no formal training before entering Harvard.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson named Brandeis as an associate justice of the Supreme Court, making him the first Jewish-American to ever hold such a position within that branch of government. Popular for his liberal views and dissenting opinions, he frequently joined forces with Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. in dissenting opinions critical of the prevailing orthodoxy of his colleagues.
The concurring opinion of Justice Brandeis in the Whitney vs. California case (1927) was described as one of the best protections of freedom of speech ever rendered by the Supreme Court of Justice.
Although he has played a role in numerous cases of the Supreme Court, Justice Brandeis will always be remembered for the protection of human rights.
During his years as a lawyer during Boston, he became known as the People's Attorney because of his success in winning low-cost life insurance for jobs in Massachusetts, blocking the rail monopoly in New England, and campaigning for a shorter working day and a minimum wage for working women in Oregon (Muller vs. Oregon, 1908). He resigned from the court in 1939 and spent the rest of his life working for the Zionist movement; he died in Washington, D.C., in 1941.
