The Spanish Governer’s Palace is an absolutely beautifully kept building, with a remarkably beautiful garden and grounds. This is a real historical gem, which can be visited multiple times without losing the awe and magic that it inspires. It is a very pleasant experience, unlike a lot of other tourists traps that are around this area. It is genuinely an amazing place. The staff is very polite and helpful, and they go above and beyond to meet and exceed expectations. They are particularly knowledgeable about the facility, and are more than happy to answer questions that pertain to any given room or space.
For me, I love visiting old buildings and seeing period antiques. Although this house was reconstructed in the 1930s to portray late 1700s standards, part of the original was preserved and the period presentation is interesting. I was unable to see the second floor due to construction and safety reasons, but I will be returning soon so I can see the changes! When I first visited 15 years ago, it contained some of the most interesting antiques and collections that I have seen, to date. The staff here does an amazing job of collecting and curating some beautiful things, and it is amazing to see what they do with their collection every time I am here.
All in all, it is a very cool museum. The tour of the mansion was excellent, the museum is beautiful and the mansion is in outstanding condition. I especially loved the outdoor area with gardens and terracotta walkways, which made the mansion feel like a hacienda. All of it is in a beautiful quiet little area of the city, near City Hall, that feels enclosed and separate from the rest of its surroundings. Therefore, allowing you to really transport yourself to another time, remember the history and culture of San Antonio, and appreciate where it originated.
