The Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas offers rotating exhibits that focus on different topics. The museum has a permanent exhibit about the natural history of South Texas and Mexico called "Rise Above". In this exhibition you will find fossils from ancient creatures like mammoths as well as artifacts used by Native American people who lived in what is now known as Texas. You can also see animals native to the region such as armadillos and bobcats.

Some other exhibitions include:

-A tribute to military veterans with uniforms, weapons, letters home and diaries;

-An exploration of Mexican culture featuring tapestries woven for Day of the Dead celebrations; and

-Paintings based on religious experiences by Mexican Impressionists.

-The museum also features a planetarium with laser light shows and an IMAX theater.

PROGRAMS & EVENTS

The museum offers a variety of programs and events for adults, children and families.

Some popular activities include:

-Science Saturday on the first Saturday of every month - this event includes hands-on experiments in topics like geology or astronomy; -Ranger Talks that give you an introduction to how science works using books, games and other fun projects designed for kids up to age 12;

-Stories with Scientists where local scientists come into the library to share their stories about what they study as well as answer questions from listeners who are curious about careers in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering math); and

-Family Science Nights on Tuesday evenings which offer interactive programs such as Botany 101 or a Butterfly Encounter.

SCHOOL PROGRAMS

The Witte Museum also offers programs for students in grades K-12, including field trips as well as classes that take place on the museum grounds such as Science Saturdays or a Botany Lab. The school program calendar is available online and includes information about what topics are being explored during each session of these experiences.

PARKING & DIRECTIONS:

The Witte Museum is on the San Antonio Riverwalk. There are two parking lots that offer free parking, one located at 500 Silver Street and another lot next to the museum on Rodriguez St. The cost for this event is $14 per person which includes general admission as well as a planetarium show or an IMAX film after you have completed your visit to the museum exhibits. Last entry to both locations is 30 minutes before closing time: 11pm on Mondays through Thursdays, 12 noon Fridays, Sundays & Holidays; and last entry into exhibit areas will be no later than 20 minutes before closing time (unless otherwise noted).

What To Bring

The Witte Museum recommends you bring a backpack, sweater or jacket in the event that it is cool inside. They also suggest comfortable shoes and cash for concessions if desired as well as your phone to take pictures of exhibits to share with friends at home via social media channels like Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

Free parking is available at all times in the front lot accessible from Broadway Street near Woodlawn Avenue behind Central Library; there's also free daytime visitor parking just north of Palmer Auditorium off Market Street next to the Henry Barshop Sr. Building (both lots have entrances off Commerce Ave.). For evenings after hours, both free parking lots are accessible from Broadway Street near Woodlawn Avenue.

Witte Museum Need to Know:

-You are encouraged to wear closed toe shoes.

-The museum does not offer lockers so bring a bag that you can carry with you around the entire museum or store your belongings in our coat check area for $0.50 per item, up to one hour of storage time. Lockers may be rented at an additional cost onsite; however, these lockings will only hold small items such as keys and wallets/purses.
