Ellis Square is one of Savannah's great preservation and conservation success stories. Ellis Square used to be a parking garage not long before. The parking lot was ultimately destroyed, and the Square was built in its place. About the fact that many people believe the Square should have been rebuilt in a more conventional way, Ellis Square is undeniably one of Savannah's most popular squares for locals and tourists alike.

The Decker Ward contains Ellis Square, which was first laid out in 1733. Until the 1950s, Ellis Square served as a market for Savannah residents. Slave auctions were held in Ellis Square prior to General Sherman's conquest of Savannah, in addition to various general goods markets.

Today, Ellis Square is a hive of activity. Many people prefer Ellis Square as a spot to rest and soak up some southern sun because City Market is just across the street.

Ellis Square's fountains are perhaps the most modern…well, anything…in Savannah's Squares. The water jets dance about in random directions as they shoot straight up into the air from underwater. You will work it out and walk the whole length of the fountain without getting soaked if you pay attention. 

The city of Savannah normally switches on the lights at night, changing the colour of the water jets. It's a lovely sight to see. Many times during the day, especially during the hot summer months, you can see children and even adults running through the fountain to enjoy the cooling effect of the water.

The fountains and lights are programmed to turn on and off in a patterned sequence. If you stare at them long enough, you'll see a trend, and you'll be able to walk around the whole fountain without getting soaked. Of course, people try it, and some of them are good.

Arrive before 10 p.m. if you want to see the fountains in Ellis Square do their dance. Most evenings, the fountains are turned off at ten o'clock, so arrive early to try them out and maybe even dare your children to race across them.

A small sculpture of Johnny Mercer, the famous Savannahian, can be found on the west side of Ellis Square. Susie Chisholm, one of the sculptors, sculpted this bronze statue. And sure to take a look at the statue.

When it's busy, it's easy to miss Johnny Mercer's statue. It's strewn around the floor as if it were a human sitting against a prop. Here's a hint: in the crowd, look for a solid bronze person; it should be the statue, but you never know.
