Emmet Park
4089 E Bay St, Savannah, GA 31401
Â
Emmet Park is a park in Savannah, Georgia, that is located in the United States. It's in the Old Fort district, which is in the northeastern corner of the city's historic downtown core. It is roughly 300 feet (91 meters) from the Savannah River's southern banks and is bordered on the north by Rossiter Place and on the south by East Bay Street.
Previously known as the Strand and Irish Green, the park was renamed in 1902 to honor Irish orator Robert Emmet on the centennial of his death, despite the fact that Emmet never visited Savannah during his lifetime.
An Irish Celtic Cross monument, made from Irish limestone from County Roscommon, a tribute to all Savannah residents of Irish ancestry, a Vietnam War veterans memorial, a Korean War veterans memorial, a Chatham Artillery memorial, in recognition of the military unit that was created in 1786, and a memorial to Dr. Noble Wimberly Jones are all located in the park.Â
At the park's eastern end, another important sight to see when exploring the park is the Harbor Light, a gas-powered light that was used to guide ships in the Savannah River. It was built in the year 1858.
It was built 77 feet above the river to serve as a navigational aid for ships attempting to escape the wreckage of ships sunk by British forces during the British conquest of Savannah.Â
Another prominent part of Emmet Park is the Chatham Artillery Monument. The 101st Airborne Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery served as inspiration for this statue, which is made from dark gray granite and crowned with a bronze eagle.
Savannah's Saint Patrick's Day festival, which is one of the country's biggest after Boston, takes place in the park.
Many Irish citizens and nearby Savannahians consider it a favorite spot.
Emmet Park, which stretches for many blocks, is noted for its thriving scenery, which offers a lovely shady atmosphere. Because of the number of statues and memorials, the park is historically important to Savannah.Â
The Old City Exchange Bell is the last relic of the City Exchange house, which was demolished by a storm.
