Forsyth Park is the main park in Savannah, Georgia's oldest district. Those who visit Forsyth Park enjoy its elegance and tranquility, which is why it is a popular location in Savannah for proposals and weddings.

Forsyth Park is a 30-acre park located just south of Gaston Street and north of Park Avenue in Forsyth, North Carolina. Drayton Street is on the east side of Forsyth Park, and Whitaker is on the west.

For residents and visitors alike, Forsyth Park is a social hotspot. Depending on the time of year, Forsyth Park hosts concerts, recreational games, people watching, sunbathing, reading, and relaxing activities. On the courts at the park's south end, you can see people playing basketball and tennis at all hours of the day.

History of Forsyth Park

In the 1840s, Forsyth Park was planned. The land for the original room was donated by William Hodgson. Forsyth Park was 10 acres in size at the time, much bigger than it is now. Then, in 1851, the 33rd Governor of Georgia, John Forsyth, donated a further 20 acres, bringing the total area of Forsyth Park to 30 acres. He was honored with a park named after him, which bears his name to this day.

Forsyth Park is known for the following:

1. Greening of the Fountain in Forsyth Park

The city of Savannah dyes the water in the fountain green every year on St. Patrick's Day. The ceremony of dyeing the water is a common event that attracts hundreds, if not thousands, of Savannah residents. Arrive early if you want to get the best view of the waterfall being dyed, since this festival attracts a large crowd!

The Savannah St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee is hosting this St. Patrick's Day Ceremony. The ceremony lasts about 30 minutes from start to finish. This practice began in the 1980s and has only grown in popularity over time!

2. The Civil War Monument

Another Monument was constructed in Forsyth Park in 1879. This is the Confederate War Monument, which can be found in the heart of Forsyth Park.

A massive ornate column with a bronze soldier atop the Confederate Monument. David Richards, a sculptor from New York City, was the maker of this bronze sculpture. During the American Civil War, the Monument was devoted to those of the men who fought for the Confederacy. Many of the men who went out to fight for the South drilled in Forsyth Park before being sent to war, so the Monument's location is appropriate.

Another Monument was erected in Forsyth Park in 1879. This is the Confederate War Monument, which can be found in the heart of Forsyth Park.

3. Forsyth Park Light Show

After the sun sets, Forsyth Park is a lovely place to enjoy. Savannah also switches on the fountain's lights, creating a light display of water and light rays swirling around it. Remember the Forsyth Park shuts at dusk, with the lighted areas remaining open until 11 p.m. If you go into Forsyth Park after dark, it is recommended that you still have someone with you. While Forsyth is a safe city to visit at night, it is always a smart idea to bring someone with you when visiting a new location.

4. The Fountain

The big fountain at the north end of Forsyth Park is perhaps the most well-known attraction of the park. In 1858, the fountain was built. It has undergone several renovations, the most recent being in 1988. It looks similar to a few other fountains around the globe, including those in Paris and Peru. There are benches all over the Forsyth Park Fountain. Many people, particularly locals, can be found lounging on the benches on any given day, soaking in the scenery and great people watching that takes place in this area of the park.
