Orleans Square
Orleans Square, Savannah, GA 31401
Â
The square was named after General Andrew Jackson's victory in the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812, which took place in 1815. The Harper-Fowlkes House, a nineteenth-century Greek Revival mansion, is located there. The home, which was built in 1842, has undergone three renovations. From 1895 to 1896, Isabel Wilbur McAlpin restored the Harper-Fowlkes Building. During the twentieth century, Alida Harper Fowlkes renovated it.
The Civic Center of Savannah and the Oglethorpe House of Savannah College of Art and Design are also located in Orleans Square.
It is home to the German Memorial Fountain, which honors the early German immigrants' contributions to the colony of Georgia's development. The fountain, which first appeared in the square in 1989 and is surrounded by beautiful stone benches and shaded by huge live oaks, is surrounded by beautiful stone benches and shaded by huge live oaks. It's the ideal place for a rest and a shot.
It was named in honor of the War of 1812 veterans. In the late 1980s, the German Societies installed a fountain and benches in this square. The Civic Center, which was completed in 1970, is located across the square.
The feeling in Orleans Square is similar to that of a college campus. Stone benches circle the dedicated fountain with the Harper-Fowlkes House in view, providing a perfect spot for tired travelers to stop and soak in all the Savannah has to offer.
The Champion-McAlpin House, also known as the Harper-Fowlkes House, was built in 1843 and is one of the major attractions in Orleans Square. The house is now open to the public as a museum as a result of numerous financial difficulties, family members, and years of tumult.
Many notable early nineteenth-century architects and designers inspired the scene on Orleans Square, including Charles Cluskey, John H. Ash, Dewitt Bruyn, John Morel, and Walter Charlton Hartridge, to name a few.Â
Many of the houses have a New England feel to them, with clapboard siding and high stoops, which were typical at the time since the majority of the architects and designers were from that region of the country.
