401 S Alamo St, San Antonio, TX 78205, United States
The Fairmount Hotel was built in 1906 in San Antonio , Texas. It was moved about six blocks through downtown San Antonio in 1985 and expanded in 1986. It was entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
History
The fate of The Fairmount was under discussion in 1984, one option being the demolition of this almost century-old building to make room for new retail and lodging spaces; however, the city of San Antonio has long had strong ties to the past and has therefore chosen to move the entire structure to a new home next to the National Historic District of La Villita.
Six days later , on April 4, 1985, at an approximate cost of $ 1 million to complete this monumental task, 3.2 million pounds of brick and mortar were lifted onto rollers, rigged with steel strips, and moved five blocks to its present location, where it settled on its new home ground. The movement featured national and international news in more than 30 foreign countries.
The Guinness Book of World Records noted that it was the largest structure ever to be moved on wheels. The hotel was re-opened on 5 September 1986, with the addition of the original structure creating the 37 accommodations it currently has. It’s recent past includes the ownership of B.K. Johnson of the King Ranch and of the Patriot American Hospitality and Wyndham Grand Heritage Hotels.
