San Antonio operates under a council-manager system of government. Although the mayor presides over City Council meetings and earns $3,000 more than most Council members, the mayor does not possess executive or veto authority. Alternatively, the mayor has one vote (of 11) on the municipal council, and the municipal manager, appointed by the municipal council, has executive authority (the municipal charter grants the manager the duty to “conduct the laws and administer the city government”). The mayor does have other administrative duties, however, including granting proclamations. The mayor is also the only elected official in the city, and in the city “a high-profile mayor will exert significant political power.” 

Under Texas law, the mayor is chosen in a non-partisan election as is the city council. When a vacancy occurs, the city council appoints an acting mayor. Like the other city council members, the mayor serves a two year term, with a four-year limit. Every mayor of San Antonio has served on the city council before since 1975.

The current Mayor of San Antonio, one of the fastest growing cities in the nation with the 7th largest population in the USA,  is Ron Nirenberg. On 8 June 2019, Mayor Nirenberg was re-elected for a second term.

If you’d like to set an appointment to have a meeting or request an appearance by the mayor, you can do so by filling out a form from their official website. If you’d like to request for proclamations or honorariums, you have to submit your request to the office of the City Clerk at least a month before the function. The City Clerk’s Office is responsible for administering all honorariums on behalf of the members of the Mayor’s and City Council. Clear requirements have been developed for the issuance of documents and the Coordinator of Ceremonials must determine what sort of honorarium, if any, can be issued. Certificate preparation can be reduced, as mass delivery contributes to a lack of value for it.
