Michael and Raquel Lara started thinking about this venture a number of years ago. Their vision was to create a unique atmosphere where family and friends could share special moments of life in a private setting. The Lara's were married in 1985 and had two wonderful sons: Michael and Samuel. Now both sons are Firefighters/EMS Paramedics. When the boys became self-sufficient, Michael and Raquel began the journey of developing a unique vineyard. Before taking the plunge, Michael began attending symposia throughout the state, studying the art and science of grape growing in Texas. At the same time, Michael, with the aid of his brother's tractor, and many others, helped form the estate and constructed structures that could help sustain the vineyard in the coming years. After the first plantings had been successful, additional vines were planted to complete the vision.
All the wines served at Lara Vineyard are made in the winery. They import grape juice from all over the world and make wine from their own vineyard. Wines range in price from $24 to $33 per bottle. Wine tastings are available for $19 and include 6-1 oz tastings and an engraved bottle. They make both sweet and dry wines. Other wines are also made, depending on the availability of grape juice. Styles differ throughout the year as they attempt to focus on the season.
The available wines can vary throughout the year. They normally bring a few dry reds, such as Cabernet Sauvignon & Temperanillo, a few dry whites like Sauvignon Blanc & Chardonnay, and a few wines to please every sweet tooth.
The Lara vineyard is a semi-private vineyard that is open to the public on the first Saturday and Sunday of each month. There are several activities planned during the year. Email updates are sent to participants to give them the first dibs on their activities. Examples of past activities include: Bring Your Own Steak Night, Karaoke, Annual Member Appreciation BBQ Night, etc.
Wine Club members receive between 2 and 6 bottles of wine per month. Wine options are based on your interest in the time of pick-up – you pick them up. Lara Vineyard offers a few quality wines from time to time. If premium wines are offered for a given month, club members can receive only half of their premium wine allowance for that month. The remaining allocation of wine may be made from some of their non-premium wines.
Monthly dues are as follows:
- club membership & 2 bottles per month $75
- club membership & 4 bottles per month $104
- club membership & 6 bottles per month $131
Wine club members can also reserve areas around the vineyard for special occasions such as birthdays, retirements, birthdays, etc. Members are restricted to booking facilities up to 1 day each month to allow all members of the club to use the facility on an equal basis. A 30% discount is applied for social activities reserved for club members for special events (see Facility Rental Fee section).
