501 Wilmington Island Rd, Savannah, GA 31410, United States

Henry C. Walthour, one of Savannah’s wealthiest cotton dealers, bought several hundred acres of land on Wilmington Island in the early 1920s. Walthour’s vision for the property was to create a high-end, prestigious community with the General Oglethorpe Hotel as its centerpiece.

Golf, a rapidly growing sport in the United States, has always been an important part of General Oglethorpe’s life. The golf course, which was created by Donald Ross, one of the country’s top golf course architects, was the hotel’s main attraction. Ross was also the architect of Pinehurst, North Carolina’s world-famous golf course. The General Oglethorpe Golf Course was even referred to as Ross’s superb golf course.

Unfortunately, the hotel was only successful for a short time before the 1929 stock market crash. Between 1935 and 1965, the hotel changed hands several times, and it was even closed at times. The golf course remained open and was packed with players as usual.

In 1965, Savannah businessman and developer William Lattimore bought the property and restored the golf course. William C. Byrd, a well-known architect, was contracted to bring the golf course up to PGA standards. He also included subsurface irrigation, canals, lakes, and ponds. Lattimore renamed the facility the Savannah Inn and Country Club in 1967. It was later renamed the Sheraton Hotel.

The golf course was then separated into its own entity, the Wilmington Island Club, which had a full-service clubhouse, pool, and tennis courts.

The golf course has been a constant throughout the years. Its magnificent design and illustrious history have preserved golf’s popularity. O.C. and Brianna Welch took over as new owners in 2018. To restore the sense of antiquity, the name was restored to the Savannah Country Club, which also added a new upmarket approach to eating and events.
