History of The Building
The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art occupies a renovated historic Classical Revival building that opened as the Cobb County United States Post Office on March 14, 1910. The Main Branch of the Cobb County/Marietta Public Library moved into the Post Office in October 1963.
In 1951, after being pushed by local women interested in art and culture to form a cultural center for their community due to its lack thereof at this time (during WWII), they organized themselves under an otherwise unassuming name: Fine Arts Club of Marietta; which would later become known simply as “The” fine arts club–a year before it leased space from Clarke library donated by City Council members where then-President Sandra Wilson's husband served on council! In 1983, the museum was moved to its current location on Roswell Street, and in 1990 it became The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art.
It was in 1989 that the Main Branch of Cobb County Public Library vacated a building on Atlanta Street and moved into its newly erected home. In September, the Marietta/Cobb Fine Arts Center changed their name to become what is now known as The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art. On April 5th 1990, these two great local establishments ceased when it became official that they had taken over where each other left off: on Roswell Street with one occupying buildings originally chosen by officials from both Cobb County and City Hall for various purposes decades ago.
Events
The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art hosts a variety of events throughout the year. From workshops for children to lectures about art and culture, museum staff strive to provide educational programs that will not only add value to your visit but also help you get more out of your time spent in Cobb County!
As well as hosting arts-focused talks led by guests from various artistic disciplines or even professionals with unique experiences (come learn how makeup is made!), MCMA offers opportunities to take part in hands-on activities such as painting on canvases at “Open Studio.” You'll find something different each time you stop by–so be sure to bookmark their website so you don't miss anything!”
Exhibitions
The Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art is always busy with interesting exhibitions that will get you out of your comfort zone and into all new worlds!
In 2018, MCMA hosted an exhibition titled “Portraits” by contemporary American artist Joe Gillette. The exhibit featured a series of 40 portraits from around the world in which the artist used paint to emphasize universal emotions through both its color and texture for viewers to relate on a personal level. By employing oil paints mixed with egg yolk as his primary medium, this show was one not-to worry about it being too delicate! His work has been exhibited at various museums including those in Dallas (TX), San Francisco (CA) and New York City (NY).
We hope this has given you insight into the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art and its history. Now, we're excited to share with you some things that make MCMA different from any other museum in Atlanta!
