Spanish Moss Trail

Beaufort, SC 29902, United States

The Spanish Moss Route is a ten-mile multi-purpose rail trail in northern Beaufort County, South Carolina that is currently under construction.

The designated trail runs from Seabrook to Port Royal, passing through Burton and Beaufort, on the former Port Royal Railroad right-of-way presently controlled by the Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority.

The Spanish Moss Trail, also known as the Lowcountry's Rails to Trail, is a 10-mile greenway in Northern Beaufort County, South Carolina, that has become a “Must-Do” activity for locals and visitors alike. The Trail is a 12-foot wide, paved walkway dedicated to those who want to walk, run, bike, fish, skate, scoot, or saunter through Spanish moss-draped neighborhoods, giving stunning Lowcountry water and marsh views, coastal wildlife viewing, and historic points of interest.

Five phases of the 10-phase master plan, which connects the cities of Beaufort and Port Royal, have been completed and are open to the public since 2012. The Trail will be roughly 16 miles long once it is fully finished. The Spanish Moss Trail is supported by governmental funds as well as private donations.

The Spanish Moss Trail is named after the historic Magnolia Line Railroad, which was founded in 1870. Railroad operations halted in 2003, and the right-of-way was bought by the Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority in 2008 for use as a utility corridor. They gave Beaufort County a surface easement in January 2011 to develop 14 miles of the corridor into a recreational path known as the Spanish Moss Trail.

Since 2013, over ten miles of the Trail, which connects the cities of Beaufort and Port Royal, have been constructed and are open to the hundreds of people who use it every day.

The 12-foot wide, paved walkway is open to pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles from sunrise to night. Wheelchairs with motors are permitted. Six trailheads with parking, pet waste stations, coastal marsh views, and recreational fishing are available, as well as two port-a-potties at the Broome Lane and Depot Road trailheads. Unleashed pets, motorized vehicles, alcoholic beverages, litter, fishing, and garbage are all prohibited.

The Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail

Dean Moss and other community leaders created the Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail in 2012 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in Beaufort County, South Carolina by lobbying for the establishment, improvement, and maintenance of the Spanish Moss Trail. The Trail's sustained success is made possible through community collaborations, local government involvement, and individual donations from people like you. The Friends are directed by Volunteer Executive Director Dean Moss and are controlled by an active Board of Directors. The Friends have a long-term professional consultant, Sissy, in addition to the many volunteers and contributors who support the Trail.

What an honor it is for the Spanish Moss Trail to be selected as one of Outside Magazine's Top 10 Urban Walking Trails in the USA, among trails in New York City, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, and Chicago! We are ecstatic that our magnificent Trail has been recognized on a national level. It is, without a doubt, one of the nicest paths, and the Friends of Spanish Moss Trail hope you will take advantage of it.
