Failed merger with University of Texas at San Antonio
State Senator Leticia Van de Putte championed the creation of a special advisory group to explore the implications of a proposed partnership between the San Antonio Health Science Center and the University of Texas (UTSA), which is also located on the northwest side of the city. The special advisory group led by Peter Flawn, former chairman of both UTSA and Austin’s University of Texas, agreed in 2010, that a merger would not be in the best interests of both universities. Among its key arguments was that both organizations already had strong leadership on a successful track, the merger would be a short-term setback for UTHSCSA and there would be little gain to UTSA’s national stature.
The Health Science Center has a public-private agreement to support the institution’s work. The $300 million initiative, called “The Health Future Project,” is aimed at building new facilities with the South Texas Research Facility and the Excellence Fund of the President.
