E-cigarettes, sometimes referred to as vapes, run on batteries and heat up nicotine, flavorings and other chemicals. They turn it into a vapor that you can breathe in. There are many chemicals that cause cancer in this vapor. This includes formaldehyde, heavy metals, and particles that can get stuck in the deepest parts of your lungs.

All vapes work on the same premise: a battery source (vape mod) is powered by a heating element (coil) which vaporizes e-juice in a small chamber (atomiser). The user then inhales the steam through a small mouthpiece.

A vape is working as a complete system. No one component is a vape, it’s exactly what you have when it’s all coming together. Although many experienced users shop a la carte for mixing and matching vapeur parts, beginners are advised to stick to pre-packaged kits with everything included to ensure appropriate compatibility.

Source of power

Vape mod is a battery device that normally uses lithium ion batteries. These devices can come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They are named accordingly, like box mods, vape pens, tube mods, to small designs called pod vapes and e-cigarettes. The term “mod” is a node to the early days of vaping when users have modified devices for more power.

Nowadays, steam mods have a wide range of electronic features and power limitations. Some are more advanced and can be adjusted in watts (variable wattage mods) or even controlled in temperature (temperature control mods); others are not adjustable and require no technological understanding from the user.

The source of the vapor

Vapor is produced in what is called a vape atomizer, sometimes called a vape tank. It’s a self-contained chamber electrically connected to the steam mod. It contains a resistance heating element — usually a metal coil — and an absorbent wick saturated with e-juice (containing similar basic ingredients to the “smoke” theater). When the user hits, the coil heats the liquid out of the wick, making smoke-looking vapor instantly.

All atomizers hold e-juice (mL), although some hold more than others. Many are designed for simplicity, and others are far more complex and hobbyist-friendly. For ease of use, the four main categories are:

• Prefilled: single-use; non-replaceable coils; disposable
• Refillable: multi-use; non-replaceable coils; disposable
• Refillable with replaceable coils: indefinitely reusable
• Rebuildable: user-installed wicks and coils; indefinitely reusable

Just like with vape mods, there’s a lot of variation to atomizers. The key thing to remember that they need to be compatible with the vape mod. Not all will physically fit on all vape mods, and some aren’t appropriate due to their coil resistance and the power they may require to function properly.

The coils in the atomizers come in different resistance ranges (ohms / acid). Some coils produce voluminous clouds (low resistance; less than 1.0 ohm) and others produce more discreet vapor (high resistance; near or above 1.0 ohm). No matter the resistance, or the type of atomizer, all the coils are discarded. They don’t die like a filament in a light bulb, but after prolonged use, flavor and vapor will decline. This can range from a few days to a week or longer.
