Martindale Army Air Field is an airfield of the Texas Army National Guard located approximately 10 miles from town center in eastern San Antonio Texas. The airfield is located directly off several main highways, which are centered on the southeast of Loop 410 and Interstate 410. The airfield is located at 29 ° 25’52′′N 98 °22’40′′W. North Foster Road, East Huston street in the south, Interstate 10/State Highway 90 in the North, and Interstate 90 on the north. The city of San Antonio is known as a humid, subtropical wet climate, which means that there are dry, wet summers, mild winters and warm, rainy nights.
History
During World War II, Randolph Army airfield was built 10 miles north of Martindale Army Airfield as an auxiliary field. At the beginnings of the Second World War, Randolph Army Air Field was the largest single-flight training facility in the world. Martindale Army Airfield saw a revival of the Army Air Corps ‘ use as a flight training base and a commercial aviation facility after the Second World War. Martindale Army Airfield, still an active air force in 1976, was abandoned by the Army between then and 1983. The Martindale Army Airfield was listed as an abandoned airfield in a 1983 United States Geological Service topographic survey for the San Antonio Area. The field was purchased by the Texas Army National Guard and designated as a revolving wing flight training center, somewhere between 1983 and 1992. At present Martindale Army Airfield serves as an impromptu training facility for Texas National Guard helicopter pilots.
Functions
The Martindale Army Airfield’s main mission is to provide the Texas Army National Guard rotary wing pilots in the San Antonio area with a secure training environment. Martindale Army Airfield offers a night and urban rotating night flight air in combination with the Randolph Air Force Base, another rotating wing facility in the area (10 miles to the North). Martindale has a large proportions of the pilots from the Texas Army National Guard 36rd Combat Air Brigade, although at one time there were Randolph AFB aircraft rotary pilots from the United States Air Force helicopter training school. Today, both weekdays and weekends, Martindale Army Airfield conducts flights with UH-60 Blackhawk Army. Night flights also take place on Night Vision Glasses (NVG’s) that are available for loans to pilots visiting. The flight slots are frequently available on a short period of time and, depending on weather conditions, flight crews may expect 1.5 to2 hours of flight.
