Elizabeth Porter Park & Sprayground

370 Montgomery St NE, Marietta, GA 30060, United States

On August 31, 2018, Marietta residents gathered to commemorate the opening of Elizabeth Porter Park, which is located at 370 Montgomery St. NE. Kids and families have flocked to the park every day since it opened, enjoying the picnic spots, paths, water fountains, and the city’s largest playground. The image of a happy community at Marietta’s newest park would have put a smile on the face of the woman who inspired the park’s name. Elizabeth Porter was a dedicated member of her community.

Who Was Elizabeth Porter?

Long before there was a playground or splash pad on the property, a citizen-led campaign erected a hospital to assist Cobb County’s African-American community during the segregation era. The hospital was converted into a recreation center after the integrated Kennestone Hospital built just a few miles distant in 1950. The center’s first director, Elizabeth Porter, was fondly remembered by all who knew her as Ms. Porter.

At the time, the center, known as the Canteen, was the sole African-American community center in Marietta. A great pillar of the community, Ms. Porter created a space where young people felt safe and welcome. She worked hard to ensure that the kids at the Canteen had everything they needed, from basketballs to sewing courses to schoolwork assistance. If it meant helping her community, no task was too minor.

Ms. Porter retired as director after 22 years in 1974, and the Canteen was renamed in her honor. When the city opted to establish new parks in 2009, the decision was made to demolish the over 60-year-old structure. But there was no doubt that the new park would honor Elizabeth Porter’s legacy.

Moreover, two enormous water quality vaults were built on-site to solve the site’s water quality challenges and to provide a more environmentally friendly stormwater outflow. The park contains a concession/restroom facility with a total area of 1955 square feet that will cater to the needs of park visitors. For family gatherings, there is a big 22′ by 42′ metal picnic pavilion on the property. For energetic individuals looking to get some exercise, the park has a 1/3 mile, 10′ wide multi-purpose walking route that circles the park.

The water park is ideal for toddlers and small children. It’s a well-thought-out splash pad area. The splash pad has a low wall around it that is supposed to be for adults to sit on and observe, but the bigger kids want to climb and run on it.

There are numerous activities to choose from, and they are properly distributed. It’s completely fenced, making it simple to keep your youngsters safe. There’s no need to waste time because one of the park’s gates leads directly to one of the play areas. Rope swings, as well as more typical swings, are available. There are also a few benches where parents can sit.
