About Birmingham, Alabama and our Delta 8 Shop

Birmingham is in central Alabama. Jefferson County’s seat is Birmingham. Birmingham’s population was 197,575 in 2021, down 1% from 2020, making it Alabama’s third-most populous city after Huntsville and Montgomery. Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama and the 50th-most populous in the U.S. with a population of 1,115,289 in 2020. Birmingham connects the Deep South, Piedmont, and Appalachian regions.

Birmingham was founded in 1871 by merging three pre-existing farm towns, including Elyton. It grew from there, annexing many of its smaller neighbors, into a mining, iron and steel, and railroading center. Birmingham was named after a major English industrial city. Most original Birmingham settlers were English. The city may have been planned to employ cheap, non-unionized, and often African American labor from rural Alabama, giving it a competitive advantage over industrial cities in the Midwest and Northeast.

Birmingham was the South’s industrial hub from its founding to the 1960s. Birmingham’s growth from 1881 to 1920 earned it the nicknames Magic City and Pittsburgh of the South. Birmingham’s major industries were iron and steel production and railroading, where rails and cars were made. Since the 1860s, Atlanta and Birmingham have been the Deep South’s two main railroad hubs. Later in the century, the economy diversified. Birmingham’s manufacturing industry remains strong, but banking, telecommunications, transportation, electrical power transmission, medical care, higher education, and insurance have grown. Coal mining is Birmingham’s only major mining industry. Birmingham is a major business and banking center in the Southeastern U.S. In addition, Regions Financial and five other Fortune 1000 companies are headquartered in Birmingham.

2. McWane Science Center

The McWane Science Center is a research archive and museum of science that can be found in the central business district of Birmingham, Alabama, in the United States. It was formerly known as the McWane Center. The historic Loveman’s department store building has been renovated into a multi-purpose complex that now houses a cutting-edge science center, aquarium, and IMAX Dome Theater with seating for 280 people. On July 11, 1998, it was first accessible to the general public.

The World of Water exhibit can be found on the lower level, and it features more than fifty different kinds of marine and freshwater aquatic life. The Itty-Bitty Magic City exhibit is located on the second floor and is geared toward younger children. All of the model buildings are created to either assist younger children in gaining new skills or to facilitate communication between the children and their parents. One illustration of this would be a miniature grocery store that teaches kids about the different types of food while they are “shopping” with their parents. The exhibit had its grand opening on May 16, 2015, and it was a reimagining of an older early childhood play place with the same name that had been located on the third floor previously.

The McWane family and McWane, Inc., both of whom contributed to the center’s funding, are honored with the naming of the McWane Science Center.
