The neighborhood of Old Hickory has a long history, dating back to the days when it served as an employee town for DuPont. The houses in Old Hickory were built to house the employees and supervisors of DuPont. This neighborhood is located in the Hadley Bend section of eastern Davidson County and is named after President Andrew Jackson who was nicknamed ‘Old Hickory.’ Old Hickory is a unique area that has been loved by many. It’s bordered by the Cumberland River on the north and Old Hickory Lake to its east, with the former city of Lakewood southbound as well. Today, the area is a mix of a country club and golf course with some parkland. But it’s most famous as home to one major employer, DuPont Plant which has been shut down but continues to employ a few hundred people.
The neighborhood is a historic area of Old Hickory that contains many listed landmark homes on the National Register of Historic Places. The smaller bungalows were built by DuPont as residences for factory workers, while larger management-level houses can be found in the community too. The Old Hickory Country Club was founded in 1926 by the DuPont Company for their employees. The Bondurant house, which originally stood on this land and served as home to the French Huguenots family was torn down in 1940 before it was replaced with a replica made up of what they know now as Old Hickory Country Club. The first 6 holes of the course were designed by Belle Meade golf pro, George Livingstone. Early greens were built over sprayed with cottonseed oil to make them solid putting surfaces for players’ clubs. And even today you can still see his handiwork at different points throughout their beautiful layout that has grown to 18 holes in 1941.
