1. U.S. Space & Rocket Center

The United States Space and Rocket Center is a museum that is located in Huntsville, Alabama. This museum is run by the state of Alabama and displays rockets, artifacts, and achievements from the United States space program. Astronaut Owen Garriott praised the location, saying it was “a terrific opportunity to learn about space in a town that has embraced the space program from the very beginning.” The museum is sometimes referred to as the “biggest space museum on Earth.”

In 1970, not long after the Apollo 12 Moon landing, which was the second crewed mission to the lunar surface, the facility first opened its doors. In addition to displaying Apollo Program hardware, it has hands-on scientific exhibits, displays relating to the Space Shuttle, as well as rocketry and aircraft from the Army. The center is located at exit 15 on Interstate 565 and occupies land that was carved out of Redstone Arsenal. It is adjacent to the Huntsville Botanical Garden and contains more than 1,500 permanent rocketry and space exploration artifacts. Additionally, the center hosts many rotating rocketry and space-related exhibits. The center provides bus tours of the adjacent Marshall Space Flight Center, which is operated by NASA.

Visitors have the opportunity to participate in one of two camp programs while they are on the grounds to gain knowledge about aviation and spaceflight. Participants at U.S. Space Camp use simulators, attend lectures, and engage in training activities in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the space program. The simulations, lectures, and survival training that are included in Aviation Challenge give participants a taste of what it’s like to learn to be a military fighter pilot. Both camps offer educational activities for children and adults, both during overnight stays and during daytime sessions.

The garden is accessible at any time of the year, although there is a charge to enter. History

In December 1979, fourteen people first suggested that Huntsville should build a botanical garden. The Huntsville-Madison County Botanical Garden Society was established and held its inaugural formal meeting in January 1980. The new society’s members persisted in showing up to City Council meetings and politely requesting funding until they were given 35 acres and three years to raise $200,000, which the city promised to match. In just six months, the funding target was reached.

The gardens would be constructed on land that the city had leased from the Alabama Space Science Commission, it was decided in January 1983. A volunteer crew started clearing the land in late 1984. A Southern Magnolia tree was planted in October 1985 to mark the opening of the new botanical garden. In 1988, the Huntsville Botanical Garden made its formal debut.

There were no structures or restrooms when the Huntsville Botanical Garden first opened; guests simply drove through. 1991 saw the adoption of the garden’s initial master plan. The butterfly center and kids’ garden debuted in 2006. In 2017, the new $16 million, 30,000 square foot visitor center for the Huntsville Botanical Garden was formally unveiled.

The 1960s-era Madison County Courthouse, which was now demolished, provided the classical Doric columns at the entrance and throughout the garden.
