Attraction #2: The Alamo

Address: 300 Alamo Plaza, San Antonio, Texas 78205, United States

The Alamo is a historic Spanish mission and fortification complex constructed by Roman Catholic missionaries in the 18th century in what is now San Antonio, Texas, United States. James Bowie and Davy Crockett perished there in 1836 during the Battle of the Alamo. Today, it serves as a museum in the Alamo Plaza Historic District and is a component of the San Antonio Missions World Heritage Site.

Originally known as the Misión San Antonio de Valero, it was one of the earliest Spanish missions in Texas, constructed for the Christianization and education of indigenous American Indians. In 1793, the mission was secularized and ultimately abandoned. Ten years later, it was converted into a stronghold that housed the Second Flying Company of San Carlos de Parras, who most likely gave the mission the name Alamo. In December 1835, following the Siege of Béxar, Mexican General Martin Perfecto de Cos surrendered the fort to the Texian Army during the Texas Revolution. Several months later, a relatively small number of Texian soldiers occupied the compound. On March 6, 1836, the defenders were annihilated during the Battle of the Alamo. Several months later, as the Mexican Army departed from Texas, they tore down and burnt a number of the Alamo’s walls and buildings.

The Alamo was frequently used to garrison Texan and Mexican soldiers for the following five years before being abandoned. In 1849, some years after Texas was annexed to the United States, the U.S. Army began renting the site for use as a quartermaster’s depot, eventually relinquishing the mission in 1876 following the establishment of neighboring Fort Sam Houston. The chapel of the Alamo was sold to the state of Texas, which occasionally offered tours but made little effort to preserve it. The surviving structures were sold to a merchant who operated them as a wholesale supermarket.

In 1891, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas were founded and preservation efforts for the Alamo began. In 1905, Adina Emilia De Zavala and Clara Driscoll successfully persuaded the state legislature to purchase the remaining buildings and designate the DRT as the site’s permanent guardian. Throughout the following century, there were periodic attempts to transfer control of the Alamo from the DRT. Beginning in 2015, Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush transferred the Alamo to the Texas General Land Office. On July 5, 2015, UNESCO declared the Alamo and the four missions in the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park as World Heritage Sites.

Attraction #3: San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

Address: 6701 San Jose Drive, San Antonio, Texas 78214, United States

The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves four of the five Spanish frontier missions located in San Antonio, Texas, in the United States of America. It is a National Historical Park. In order to evangelize the indigenous people in the area and bring them into the Christian faith, Catholic religious orders established these outposts. During the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, these missions were an integral component of a colonization system that covered the entirety of the Spanish Southwest.

The missions are named in the following order: Mission Concepción, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada. This geographical order corresponds to the direction of flow of the San Antonio River from north to south. Directly to the east of Mission San Juan, on the other side of the river, is the Espada Aqueduct, which is also part of the park.

The Alamo, the fifth and most well-known of San Antonio’s missions, is not included in the park’s boundaries. The State of Texas owns the property, which may be found in the downtown area of San Antonio upstream from the Mission Concepción. Custodianship of the Alamo was transferred from the Daughters of the Republic of Texas to the Texas General Land Office in July of 2015. Prior to that time, the Alamo was managed by the Republic of Texas.

Along with the Alamo Mission in San Antonio, the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site on July 5, 2015.
