Raleigh is a suburban city in Tennessee’s Memphis metropolitan area, named for a formerly incorporated town that once sat at its heart. Raleigh is bordered on the west by Frayser (the north-south Illinois Central Railroad tracks, which formed the Memphis city limits until 1975), on the east by Bartlett, on the south by the Wolf River, and Interstate 40, and on the north by Memphis city limits. Raleigh was Shelby County’s first county seat.
