In the US and the UK, the research into the efficacy of CBD in the treatment and management of severe seizures and seizure conditions including Lennox Gastaut and Dravet syndromes have achieved so much success that it has attracted the attention of the regulatory bodies.
For once, the Food and Drug Administration FDA and the British Pediatric Neurology Association BPNA, both regulatory agencies in the United States and the United Kingdom respectively, agree with the findings of scientists that CBD can help individuals dealing with epilepsy.
A variety of high quality CBD products can possesses anti-epileptic properties.
The Strength of the Evidence
In three double blind randomized controlled trials of pure CBD in children and young people with epileptic syndromes, results showed a greater reduction in monthly seizures compared to placebos. There was also a greater reduction in drop seizures in people taking CBD compared to those on a placebo. Further open label studies have shown that it also have an anti-epileptic effect in the epilepsies in general.
In the United States, the FDA has approved a CBD based seizure medication; Epidolex as an anti-epileptic medication for the treatment and management of severe seizures and seizure conditions including Lennox Gastaut and Dravet syndromes.
How CBD Can Help for Epilepsy
If you have someone who has or is suffering from epilepsy, there is the likelihood that they must have been prescribed an anti-epileptic drug (AED). However, one-third of the time, AEDs fails. Either the patient experiences severe side effects from the medication, or they have a treatment-resistant form of epilepsy. But, that’s not the same for CBD. CBD works and has been proven to reduce the rate of seizures in confirmed patients.
Scientist credits many of the illnesses bedeviling humans as being the result of an unbalance in the body system and bodily functions, and an enhanced ECS can correct this phenomenon.
The Science – How It Works
CBD interacts with the Endocannabinoid System ECS and influence it to regulate and correct anomalies in the body system. The ECS is responsible for maintaining homeostasis (equilibrium balance in the body and body functions) in the body and helps support the body to repair itself and prevent sickness.
Outside of enhancing the ECS, the study on how CBD may help treat epilepsy is still ongoing, but, that does not take away from the fact that CBD has shown credible efficacy in decreasing the severity and frequency of seizures in epileptic patients.
Even for epilepsy that has been found resistant to other forms of treatment, CBD still works.
