About Huntsville, Alabama and our Delta 8 Shop

In the state of Alabama, the United States, the city of Huntsville can be found in the counties of Madison, Limestone, and Morgan. It serves as the administrative center of Madison County. The city with the most people living in it is Huntsville, which is located in Alabama. It can be found in the Appalachian region of the state’s northernmost part.

In the year 1805, Huntsville was established as a settlement within the Mississippi Territory, and in the year 1811, it was formally incorporated as a town. After Alabama was officially recognized as a state in 1819, the capital city of Huntsville served in that capacity for one year before being relocated to a location that was closer to the state’s geographic center. The city expanded onto the nearby hills to the north of the Tennessee River as the 1800s progressed, and around that time, textile mills were built nearby.

Since the end of the Second World War, it has experienced the majority of its growth. The United States Army established Redstone Arsenal not far from here during the war. It included a chemical weapons plant and other facilities related to the war. Following the conclusion of World War II, additional research on rockets was carried out at Redstone Arsenal, which was then followed by modifications for use in space exploration. At one point or another, the Marshall Space Flight Center of NASA, the United States Army Aviation and Missile Command, and most recently, the operational support headquarters of the FBI, all found their way to be situated in the vicinity of Redstone Arsenal. Huntsville has been included on the list of “America’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations for 2010” that was compiled by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

As of the census completed in the year 2020, the population of the city was 215,006, making it the most populous city in the state of Alabama. Since the expansion of its coal and steel industries in the earlier part of the 20th century, Birmingham has held the title of the largest city. The Huntsville-Decatur-Albertville, Alabama Combined Statistical Area consists of five counties, and Huntsville is the most populous city in the area. The population of the Birmingham metropolitan area is larger than that of the Huntsville metropolitan area, making the Birmingham metropolitan area the most populous metropolitan area in the state.

Here are our top 3 picks for the best things to see and do in this wonderful city!

1. U.S. Space & Rocket Center

The United States Space and Rocket Center is a museum that is located in Huntsville, Alabama. This museum is run by the state of Alabama and displays rockets, artifacts, and achievements from the United States space program. Astronaut Owen Garriott referred to the location as “a great way to learn about space in a town that has embraced the space program from the very beginning.” The museum has been given the moniker of “Earth’s largest space museum” on occasion.

In 1970, not long after the Apollo 12 Moon landing, which was the second crewed mission to the lunar surface, the center first opened its doors. In addition to displaying Apollo Program hardware, it houses hands-on science exhibits, displays relating to the Space Shuttle, as well as rocketry and aircraft from the Army. The center is located at exit 15 on Interstate 565 and occupies land that was carved out of Redstone Arsenal. It is adjacent to the Huntsville Botanical Garden and contains more than 1,500 permanent rocketry and space exploration artifacts. Additionally, the center hosts many rotating rocketry and space-related exhibits. The center provides bus tours of the nearby Marshall Space Flight Center, which is operated by NASA.

Visitors have the opportunity to participate in one of two camp programs while they are on the grounds to gain knowledge about aviation and spaceflight. Participants at U.S. Space Camp use simulators, attend lectures, and engage in training activities in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the space program. The simulations, lectures, and survival training that are included in Aviation Challenge give participants a taste of what it’s like to train as a military fighter pilot. Both camps offer educational programs for children and adults, both during overnight stays and during daytime sessions.

There is a charge to enter at any time of the year. The garden was visited by 353,841 people in 2018, placing it third on the list of the most popular paid tourist attractions in the state of Alabama.

The gardens feature a butterfly house that is open seasonally, as well as aquatic, annual, daylily, fern, herb, perennial, rose, and wildflower gardens, in addition to a nature path and a collection of Flowering Dogwood trees. The following is a list of the distinct areas within the garden:

  • Nature center

History:

In December 1979, fourteen individuals first proposed the concept of establishing a botanical garden in Huntsville. The Huntsville-Madison County Botanical Garden Society was established and held its first official meeting in January 1980. The members of the new society attended City Council meetings repeatedly and politely requested funding until they were given 35 acres and three years to raise $200,000, which the city agreed to match. The funding objective was reached in only six months.

It was decided in January 1983 that the gardens would be constructed on land leased from the Alabama Space Science Commission. A volunteer crew began clearing the land in late 1984. A Southern Magnolia was planted in October 1985 to dedicate the new botanical garden. In 1988, the Huntsville Botanical Garden was inaugurated.

When the Huntsville Botanical Garden was first established, there were no buildings or restrooms; visitors drove through. In 1991, the first garden master plan was adopted. The butterfly center and children’s garden opened in 2006. The Huntsville Botanical Garden debuted its new $16 million, 30,000 square foot visitor center in 2017.

The Classical Doric columns at the entrance and throughout the garden were salvaged from the demolished 1960s-era Madison County Courthouse.

The Huntsville Museum of Art, also known simply as the HMA, is an art museum that can be found in Huntsville, Alabama. The HMA is a focal point for a variety of cultural pursuits and events, and it is located in Downtown Huntsville’s Big Spring Park.

The Huntsville Art League and Museum Association (HALMA) was established in 1957 with the intention of expanding Huntsville’s existing arts community and establishing a museum in the city at some point in the future. On August 13, 1970, the City of Huntsville passed Ordinance No. 70-134, which established the Museum Board of the City of Huntsville. This ordinance also formalized the establishment of the Huntsville Museum Association (HMA). While the rest of HALMA was forced to move into the Heart of Huntsville Mall, the Museum held its first exhibition in 1973 and moved into its first permanent facility at the Von Braun Center in 1975. The museum continued to operate under the name Huntsville Museum of Art after the HALMA organization officially disbanded in 1989, while the rest of the organization became known as the Huntsville Art League (HAL). In March of 1998, the HMA relocated to its current location in Big Spring Park, which at the time housed seven different galleries.

The Museum was expanded in 2010 with the addition of the Davidson Center, which features four new special event facilities, the Stender Family Education Galleries, seven new exhibition galleries, and a parking lot adjacent to the building. The Museum’s new facility spans 75,034 square feet and features fourteen galleries, each of which is 20,000 square feet in size.

In order to accommodate weddings, receptions, meetings, and other events, the Museum features a number of different meeting and event spaces spread out throughout the building. The entirety of the complex is planned to integrate interior and exterior spaces and to act as a tangible focal point for the improvement of quality of life and economic development that will be to the benefit of the entire Huntsville/Madison County area. The Museum is accessible to visitors with disabilities in every way. The Museum participates in the North American Reciprocal Museums program as an affiliated institution.
