1. Chatham Square

One of the 22 squares that make up Savannah, Georgia, United States, Chatham Square is one of them. It was designed in 1847 and is situated at the intersection of Barnard Street and West Wayne Street, which places it in the fifth and southernmost row of the city’s five rows of squares. In the city’s grid of squares, it is located in the southwestern most corner, to the south of Pulaski Square and to the west of Monterey Square. William Pitt, the first Earl of Chatham, was honored with the naming of this public space. Despite the fact that Pitt never set foot in Savannah, he was an early supporter of the Georgia colony. In recognition of his contributions, Chatham Square and Chatham County were named after him. The Enoch Hendry Row House, located at 108–112 West Taylor Street, boasts the distinction of being the oldest structure on the square. It was constructed in 1851.

Locals sometimes refer to Chatham Square as Barnard Square, after the Barnard Street School, which was constructed in 1901 (it is actually located at 212 West Taylor Street and has been used as a building for the Savannah College of Art and Design since 1988. This is in reference to the fact that Chatham Square is adjacent to the Barnard Street School. Pepe Hall is its new name after the college renamed it.

A sundial that was erected in the square in 1964 and named after the African-American politician Louis Burke Toomer can be found there.

2. Forsyth Park

Forsyth Park, located in the historic district of Savannah, Georgia, United States, is a large urban park that was formerly known as the Military Parade Ground. It spans an area of 0.12 square kilometers (about 30 acres). Gaston Street can be found to the north of the park, while Drayton Street can be found to the east, Park Avenue can be found to the south, and Whitaker Street can be found to the west. The Savannah Shamrocks Rugby Club calls this their home field, and it also features walking paths, a children’s play area, a Fragrant Garden for the blind, a large fountain, tennis courts, basketball courts, areas for soccer and Frisbee, and more. Concerts are presented to the general public at various intervals and can be seen taking place at Forsyth from time to time.

In the 1840s, the park was established on 10 acres of land donated by William Brown Hodgson. The park was enlarged and renamed for Georgia Governor John Forsyth in 1851. By 1853, all of Savannah’s original wards were occupied. Officially sold to the Military Captains Association in 1859, a large 18,9-acre Parade Ground was added to the south end of the park. This is supported by two ordinances, one from 1914 and the other from 1923. The owners consented to the city’s use of the land for public enjoyment in exchange for a permanent exemption from property taxes and the perpetual maintenance and protection of the land. General James Oglethorpe’s plan anticipated this park, which was made possible by Forsyth’s donation of 20 acres of land.
